Kane County Sheriff To Equip Deputies With Body Cameras

KANE COUNTY, IL — Sheriff’s deputies in Kane County will soon be equipped with body cameras while on duty, according to a report by the Aurora Beacon-News.

Kane County Sheriff Ron Hain moved to acquire the equipment for 65 deputies and sergeants in response to sustained calls for police reform after George Floyd’s death May 25 while being arrested by Minneapolis police, the report states.

The Kane County Board last week approved a bid from Midwest Public Safety, of Decatur, to supply the body cameras, as well as upgrade dashboard cameras on Kane County Sheriff’s Office vehicles, the Beacon-News reports.

The sheriff’s office will lease the body and dashboard cameras from Midwest Public Safety for the next five years for about $141,000 per year, the report states. Hain told the Beacon-News that renting the equipment is cheaper than buying it due to the cost to upgrade technology.

Aurora officials are also moving forward with plans to acquire body cameras for the city’s police officers, a key plank of Mayor Richard Irvin’s CHANGE initiative, which he announced last month in the wake of numerous protests.

Aurora officials have put out a request for information from companies about how to implement a body camera program within the Aurora Police Department. They are expected to provide more detailed information about the body camera program at the Aurora City Council’s Aug. 11 meeting.
