St. Charles Man Who Shot At Wife Back In Jail After Hospital Stay

Bail for Scott Turyna raised to $5 million. Deputies removed Turyna, who was free on bond, from Delnor Hospital and returned him to jail.

ST. CHARLES, IL —A St. Charles man accused of trying to kill his wife is behind bars again — with bail now increased to $5 million — after undergoing kidney dialysis at Delnor Hospital last week. Scott Turyna, 66, was free on $100,000 bond, his whereabouts tracked by GPS monitor, until deputies arrested him on a warrant at the hospital Friday and carted him back to jail.

On Tuesday, Kane County Judge D.J. Tegeler ruled against a request by Turyna's lawyer to free the man from jail. His trial is due to start Jan. 29. Turyna attacked his wife of 26 years on May 3, 2016, according to prosecutors, punching her in the face and head during a financial argument, then chasing her from their Hunt Club Drive home into the street where he fired five shots at her as she screamed "he's got a gun." One bullet struck a nearby home. A passerby walking his dog tackled Turyna and subdued him for police.

One week later, his 55-year-old wife filed for divorce. Since that day, Turyna's ex-wife and his daughter have lived in fear. The ex-wife sought an order of protection immediately, and their daughter obtained a protective order against her father as well. After his arrest in 2016, 26 firearms and 3,000 rounds of ammunition were confiscated from his home.

Authorities would not divulge why Turyna was hospitalized for dialysis treatment. Turyna refused to attend a Tuesday court hearing, reports the Daily Herald. His latest booking mugshot depicts a man who looks much different than the one arrested in the spring of 2016.

Turyna claims he has amnesia and cannot remember attacking his wife or shooting at her. While in police custody, however, Turyna made several statements about why he beat and shot at his wife, according to police: "I did what I did ... I know why you guys are here ... You guys are completely right because I did what I did ... I did what I did because she got out of line" and "I hit her and I shot her so it is probably going to be a felony."

Turyna is charged with felony attempted murder and several other crimes, including two counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm, a class X felony; one count of aggravated domestic battery, a class 2 felony; and one count of interference with the reporting of a domestic violence, a class A misdemeanor. His initial bail after arrest was $500,000.
