Wind Chill Warning Through Noon Thursday

UPDATE: 4:32 p.m.

The National Weather Service has upgraded its wind chill advisory to a wind chill warning from 7 p.m. Wednesday through noon Thursday, Jan. 23, 2014.

At the same the National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for blowing snow in Kane County through 4 a.m. Thursday.

Northwest winds gusting to 35 mph will cause blowing and drifting snow that will also reduce visibility for travelers, along with scattered snow showers through early evening, and accumulations of about a half inch.

The gusty winds will push wind chills to well below zero overnight, from -20 to as much as -25 degrees into Thursday morning. Drivers are urged to use caution, and anyone going outdoors is urged to dress warmly. Frostbite and hypothermia under these conditions can set in within minutes.

An Arctic blast is coming, and the National Weather Service has issued a wind chill advisory for Kane and DuPage counties that begins at 9 p.m. Wednesday and runs through dawn on Thursday.

The National Weather Service predicts wind chills will drop to -20 degrees by 10 p.m., and will descend to -22 to -28 degrees overnight. Frostbite and hypothermia can occur within minutes with these kind of wind chill values, the weather service said.
