Coyote Sightings On Rise In DuPage County: How To Keep Pets Safe

Coyote breeding season runs from January through March. Here's how to protect your pet during this time.

WHEATON, IL -- If you've been spotting more coyotes - or what you think may be a coyote - in the area, you aren't imagining things. DuPage County Animal Services (DCAS) says coyote breeding season is upon us and is urging pet owners to take precautions to keep their animals safe.

According to DCAS, coyotes are typically more visible during coyote breeding season, which usually takes place from January through March. In January, a Wheaton family's pet Cockapoo was found dead with two coyotes standing over it in a park near the family's home.

In January, a company removing snow in Wheaton shared a video on Facebook that showed two apparent coyotes running past.

DCAS said in a press release that increased coyote sightings in residential areas are not uncommon, due to humans moving closer to coyote habitats. They added that humans and coyotes are "capable of coexisting with people" and "do not pose a threat to humans."

Cats and small dogs are especially susceptible to coyote attacks, though, DCAS said. Here are some ways you can protect your pet from coyote attacks.

  • Keep your dog on leash at all times
  • Pull your leashed dog close to you if you see a coyote
  • Keep cats inside at all times
  • If you see a coyote, walk away. Don't run.

According to DCAS, people should avoid "unnecessary harassment" if they spot a coyote from afar. If a coyote comes close, they recommend making loud noises and waving your arms in an attempt to shoo the coyote away.
