Mayor Says 2013 a Year of Progress for Wheaton

Gresk cited jumps in construction, business openings,, planning for downtown improvements as signs the city is moving forward.

“A year marked by progress” is how Mayor Michael Gresk described 2013 in Wheaton on Thursday, highlighting some significant developments and an improved economy over the past year, the Chicago Tribune reports.


Gresk made his remarks during a State of the City speech at Arrowhead Golf Club, where the Tribune said he laid out such positive signs as:


  • The number of building permits for single-family homes in 2013 shot up 69 percent from 2012.

  • The city issued 47 commercial remodeling permits and 28 commercial re-occupancy permits.

  • The opening of the new Mariano’s grocery store.

  • The Wheaton 121 luxury apartments opened to tenants.

  • The DuPage Medical Group development.

  • About 24 business openings.


    • But Gresk pointed out there are other positive thing happening in Wheaton, the Tribune reports. His speech touched on the drafting of the plan for downtown Wheaton plan, which advises $65 million in improvements such as creating festival streets, a central park, new streetscaping and gateways into the downtown.
