Tornadoes Confirmed In Wheaton, Lombard Monday

The tornadoes uprooted trees and damaged property in Wheaton and Lombard Monday, according to the National Weather Service.

WHEATON, IL — Monday's storm system brought tornadoes through Wheaton and Lombard, the National Weather Service (NWS) confirmed Tuesday. According to NWS, the Wheaton tornado reached wind speeds of 90 miles per hour and the Lombard-area tornado got up to 95 miles per hour.

The Wheaton tornado started near the intersection of Seminary Avenue and Scott Street and headed northeast. The tornado took down the 50-foot steeple at College Church and traveled about a quarter of a mile before lifting near College Avenue and Howard Street, according to the National Weather Service.

The Lombard-area tornado started just east of Lilacia Park and followed a northeastern path. The NWS reports that the tornado uprooted and snapped trees, causing a significant amount of damage near the Lombard Commons just south of Saint Charles Road.

The tornado, which traveled for about two miles, tore roofs from homes in the area before lifting near Jefferson Middle School.

In the aftermath of the severe weather, the City of Wheaton is holding a special tree damage pickup event on Aug. 17. Limbs and branches from the storms will be collected if they are placed on a home's parkway by Aug. 17.
