Wheaton Pride Proclamation Coming At Upcoming Council Meeting

WHEATON, IL — Citing inaccurate information that city officials say has been circulating about whether the city would issue a Pride Proclamation, Mayor Phil Suess and the city council issued a joint statement on Monday, indicating a proclamation is coming later this month.

The city is scheduled to issue a proclamation at the city’s council’s June 21 meeting, which is consistent with the city’s process from last year, the statement said. City officials said issuing a Pride proclamation is “something that is important” to the community as evidenced by the letters and statements of support the city received in 2020.

A city spokeswoman said in an email Monday that the city was made aware of a social media post that stated the city would not be issuing a Pride Proclamation. She said the statement was issued to make it clear a proclamation would be coming later this month.

“The City of Wheaton is dedicated to the acceptance of all of its residents, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, age, beliefs, color, disability, ethnicity, identity, race or religion,” city’s statement Monday said. “We want everyone who lives, works or visits our community to feel valued and safe. We support equality for all members of the Wheaton community.”

On a city government website dedicated to Pride month, officials wrote that the Wheaton Community Relations Committee encourages the community to learn more about the history of LGBTQ+Pride month and explore some of the local events that will be held in June around the community celebrating Pride month.
