Wheaton Shows Off New Front Street, But Traffic Signals Delayed

The new Martin Memorial Plaza has opened, but the Front Street traffic signals will be delayed until mid-February.

WHEATON, IL --- Wheaton residents were able to enjoy the city's revamped front street just in time for the new year. After months of work, construction on Front Street ended, bringing improved utilities, wider sidewalks, and a brand new Martin Memorial Plaza.

Illuminated by new lighting, Front Street's piece de resistance is the new Martin Memorial Plaza, which is located on the opposite end of the street than it had been before. Residents can take a break from shopping or strolling downtown to relax in the plaza's seating and warm up by its cozy outdoor fireplace.

Front Street's many new features and amenities are already on display, but city officials say there is a slight snag with the main drag's updated traffic lighting. In a recent Wheaton Weekly issue, city officials said the installation of traffic lights for Front Street will be delayed due to an "unforeseen issue" with the company that manufactures the poles for the traffic lights.
