13 Unlocked Cars Burglarized Over 2 Nights In Kenilworth: Police

KENILWORTH, IL — More than a dozen vehicles were burglarized in Kenilworth over two nights this week, police said. Early Friday morning, suspected car burglars fled Wilmette and Kenilworth police onto the Edens Expressway. When officers checked the area near where the suspects' vehicle was first seen, they found more vehicles had been entered in multiple villages.

"Communities in the extended area have all had vehicles stolen and burglarized as a result of these opportunists looking for unlocked vehicles," Kenilworth police said in a safety alert.

At 1:26 a.m., a Kenilworth officer noticed a maroon sedan in the 300 block of Leicester Road. The driver immediately fled. Police said a home security video system recorded the suspects about a block away and five minutes prior to encountering police.

Police released a video (below) of two people approaching a pair of parked vehicles in a driveway. The resident locked their car doors and the suspected burglars move on.

Items removed from some of the six cars targeted Wednesday night included a garage door opener, an owner's manual, identification cards, credit cards and cash, according to police. All property taken was later located.

More cash, credit cards and miscellaneous papers were stolen from seven more vehicles in Kenilworth the next night.

"These offenders are drawn to this area because easy opportunities to commit crimes exist," police said.

The Kenilworth Police Department requested residents help discourage car burglars from targeting the village by locking their car doors and removing keys and valuables from inside.
