Natural Gas Leak Forces Wilmette Residents To Shelter In Place

Nearby residents were asked to stay in their homes with windows and doors closed as fire crews conducted door-to-door safety checks.

WILMETTE, IL — Fire crews were on the scene of an active gas leak in Wilmette Thursday morning, according to the village. Staff asked residents in the area of 7th Street between Greenleaf and Central avenues to remain inside their homes, close all windows and doors and avoid driving anywhere.

Firefighters were set to head door-to-door to make sure those who live in the area are safe, according to a notice from village staff. Staff from natural gas company Nicor are also on scene. All others were asked to avoid the area.

UPDATE: Village staff announced shortly after 1 p.m. that the gas main had been capped, eliminating any potential public safety concern.
