Parents of New Trier Grad Killed by Drunk Driver Speak Out

Sarah McCausland, 19, of Winnetka, died in a hit-and-run in upstate New York on Jan. 31, 2014.

The family of Sarah McCausland, who was struck and killed last year by a drunk driver while walking with a group of friends from Bard College in upstate New York, say they don’t feel justice has been served in her case.

Parents Andy and Sandra McCausland tell the Chicago Tribune they question why the driver, Carol Boeck, was allowed to drink alcohol for hours at an American Legion hall that did not possess a liquor license, and why that establishment was not held accountable.

Before Boeck’s sentencing, the couple knocked on the door of the legion hall and the man who answered denied they served alcohol, reported the Tribune.

Sandra McCausland told him, “If only person had intervened, we might still have our child.”

Boeck, who had a prior DUI conviction, pleaded guilty to the hit-and-run and will be eligible for parole in seven years.
