That's why Small Business Saturday has caught on so quickly over the past seven years. As big-box retailers move to dominate Black Friday and online sellers siphon up billions of dollars in business on Cyber Monday, don't forget about your local mom and pop stores, your neighborhood startups and your multi-generational family businesses.

Small Business Saturday has been growing every year. In 2016, 112 million shoppers came out and generated an estimated $15.4 billion for small business owners, according to self-reported data in a survey sponsored by the National Federation of Independent Businesses and American Express – the "founding sponsor" and registered trademark holder of the event.

The Book Stall, 811 Elm St.

Come support independent businesses in Winnetka and interact with fellow readers in the community with a variety of celebrations at the Book Stall. Starting at 10 a.m., sample staff-made recipes baked by the staff. At 11 a.m., Miss Amy will read from her favorite recent releases of picture books (recommended ages 3-6.) The annual in-store Treasure Hunt is scheduled to run from 1-3 p.m. (for kids ages 7-10.) And all day long you can enter a raffle to win books, gift cards and more. Reprise Coffee Roasters, 950 Green Bay Rd.

Free live music from Kai Anderson & The Pickups will mark Small Business Saturday at Reprise's Winnetka location at Hubbard Woods park. It's the second for the local small business, a privately-held specialty coffee retailer that began in the upstairs apartment of its cofounder, Adam Paronto, and expanded to West Lake Forest train station.

Sawbridge Studios, 897 Green Bay Rd.

Plus, there'll be horse and carriage rides from 11 .m. - 2 p.m. They'll be picking people up at the northwest corner of Vernon and Hazel avenues, and the rides are sponsored by North Shore Community Bank.
