Winnetka Snow Plowing Updates

"Public Works crews are continuing round-the-clock snow clearing operations. All of the Village’s main roads are open and clear, and the side streets been cleared and are passable. Over the next 24 hours, the snow removal crews will undertake the following activities:

  • Crews will be clearing streets and sidewalks around schools in preparation for re-opening of classes Friday morning.
  • Crews will continue hauling snow out of the commercial districts.
  • Crews will begin snow removal from residential sidewalks. Due to the large accumulations of snow at corners and the deep drifts, sidewalk plowing will take considerably longer than usual. Staff hopes to have residential sidewalks cleared by Sunday morning.

Because of the snow depth, an unfortunate result of plowing the sidewalks will be that snow may be deposited across your driveway. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Snow Emergency parking prohibitions in effect. The Village snow emergency plan remains in effect. Parking is prohibited on Village streets when two or more inches of snow has fallen within a 24 hour period or when 2 or more inches of snow remain on the roadway. Please do not park on the street until the snow emergency is over. Cars parked on Village streets during a snow emergency will be ticketed, and may be relocated if they block the passage of vehicles or snow plows, or cause a public safety hazard.

Power Outages. Due to the continuing strong winds, power outages may occur. In the event of a power outage, do not call 9-1-1 unless the power outage is accompanied by an emergency. Please report power outages by calling (847) 501-2531.

Other Impacts. The deep snow accumulations will make shoveling very difficult and potentially hazardous. During and immediately following the blizzard of 1999 over 40 people in the Chicago area lost their lives to heart attacks while shoveling the heavy snowfall. Take frequent breaks indoors and do not underestimate the task at hand when shoveling. In addition, strong winds and cold temperatures are resulting in wind chills near zero, and bitterly cold temperatures tonight are forecast to produce wind chills of 20 to 40 below zero in the coldest areas. Take precautions against the cold, and avoid going outdoors unless it is absolutely necessary."
