Fake village workers burglarize home; Winnetka man charged with injuring officers; suspicious padlocks appear: New Trier Area Police Blotter

The following information comes from the Glencoe, Kenilworth, Northfield, Wilmette and Winnetka police departments as a record of police activity and incidents reported to the police. Criminal charges merely represent accusations by the state, and county prosecutors often choose to drop or reduce them. INCIDENTS

MISDEMEANOR THEFT
Someone stole a bicycle that was left unlocked in the 600 block of Greenwood Avenue.

FELONY THEFT
A Green Bay Road resident reported on the afternoon of Nov. 9 that someone had obtained their credit card and accrued nearly $2,000 in unauthorized charges on it.

IDENTITY THEFTS

  • On Nov. 6, three residents of Washington and Adams avenues reported their identities were used to fraudulently apply for unemployment insurance benefits.
  • On Nov. 7, a Madison Avenue resident reported the discovery of two unknown social security numbers in their credit report.
  • On Nov. 8, a Vernon Avenue resident reported their identity was used to fraudulently apply for unemployment insurance benefits.
  • A Beach Road resident reported on Nov. 9 that someone used their identity to open an account with an electrical utility and to rent property out of state. Both bills are delinquent but the resident has suffered no financial loss.
  • On Nov. 9, residents of Edgebrook Lane and Vernon Avenue reported unauthorized use of their identity to apply for unemployment insurance benefits.
  • On Nov. 10, residents of Jefferson Avenue, Hogarth Lane and Oak Drive all reported their identities had been used to fraudulently apply for unemployment insurance benefits.

ARRESTS/CITATIONS

Shawn F. Brown, 28, of the 300 block of Park Avenue, Glencoe, and Estela Medina, 41, of the 700 block of Longfellow Lane, Mundelein, were arrested around 1 a.m. on Nov. 1 in the 800 block of Vernon Avenue. Brown was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving with a suspended license, driving with a license suspended for a second DUI and obstructing a police officer. He was also issued citations for failure to signal, obstructing traffic, illegal transportation of an open container of alcohol and possession of cannabis by a driver. Medina was charged with obstructing a police officer.

CAR BURGLARIES
Between midnight and 7:45 a.m. on Oct. 31, two unlocked cars were burglarized in the 600 block of Roger Avenue. A pair of sunglasses worth $200 was taken from one of them, nothing of value was reported stolen from the other.

IDENTITY THEFTS

  • An Exmoor Road resident reported midday on Oct. 30 that someone used their identity to fraudulently apply for unemployment insurance benefits.
  • A Park Drive resident reported on the morning of Nov. 2 that someone had used their identity to fraudulently apply for unemployment insurance benefits.

NORTHFIELD

INCIDENTS

HOME BURGLARY
A resident in the 200 block of Churchill Street reported that someone burglarized their attached garage sometime between Oct. 28 and the morning of Nov. 2.

ATTEMPTED BURGLARY
A landscaping contractor reported that someone tried to burglarize a trailer parked in the 300 block of South Happ Road around 12:50 p.m. on Nov. 4.

PADLOCKED PROPERTY
The owner of a shipping container stored in the 400 block of Central Avenue reported on the afternoon of Nov. 5 that someone had put several padlocks on it, preventing it from being opened. The owner was asked to contact the owner of the property.

SUSPICIOUS VISITOR
A resident in the 200 block of Bristol Street reported that around noon on Nov. 6 someone knocked on their door and offered an estimate for home repairs. The resident declined and called police after the person left the area.

IDENTITY THEFTS

  • On Nov. 4, residents of Hedge Row, The Landmark and South Happ Road all reported someone used their identity to file for fraudulent unemployment insurance benefits.
  • On Nov. 5, residents of Colonial Lane and Dickens Road that someone used their identity to fraudulently apply for unemployment insurance benefits.
  • On Nov. 6, Thackeray Lane and Middlefork Road residents reported their identities had been used to file for unemployment insurance benefits.

ARRESTS

A 41-year-old Chicago man was arrested around 8:45 p.m. Nov. 8 and charged with driving with a suspended license and cited for operating an uninsured motor vehicle and speeding following a traffic stop near the intersection of Willow and Wagner roads.


WILMETTE

INCIDENTS

ARMED ROBBERY
Someone who had arranged to sell a pair of gym shoes through an online marketplace reported being robbed at gunpoint around 8:45 p.m. on Oct. 30 at the Shell gas station at 3501 Lake Avenue. One of the men between the ages of 25 and 30 who showed up claiming to be interested in buying pulled out a gun and demanded the shoes before they fled south on the Edens Expressway.

SHOPLIFTING
An employee at the Walgreens, 811 Green Bay Road, reported on Nov. 5 that at an unspecified time someone came into the store, stole unspecified items from its shelves and was gone before officers arrived.

SIGN THEFT

  • A resident of the 700 block of Lamon Avenue reported on Oct. 30 that someone stole a political sign from their front yard.
  • A resident in the 100 block of 17th Street reported on Nov. 1 that someone stole a political sign from their front yard.
  • On Nov. 3, a resident in the 1600 block of Lake Avenue reported someone stole a political sign from their front lawn during the previous night.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE

  • Two political signs in the front yard of a home in the 2500 block of Wilmette Avenue were reported damaged on Oct. 29.
  • A resident of the 2300 block of Old Glenview Road reported on Oct. 29 that someone damaged a political sign in their front yard.
  • Someone damaged an "exit" sign attached to a tent at Central Elementary School, 910 Central Ave., police were told on Nov. 2.
  • A resident of the 1500 block of Wilmette Avenue reported on Nov. 3 that someone damaged a political sign in their yard.

IDENTITY THEFTS

  • A Lake Avenue resident reported on Oct. 29 that someone used their identity to fraudulently apply for unemployment insurance benefits.
  • On Nov. 2, residents of Pawnee Road, Elmwood Avenue, Fairway Drive, Washington Avenue and Ridge Road reported their identities had been used to apply for fraudulent unemployment insurance benefits.
  • On Nov. 3, residents of Lamon and Central Park avenues reported their identities had been used to apply for fraudulent unemployment insurance benefits.
  • A Chilton Lane resident reported on Nov. 4 that someone had used their identity to fraudulently apply for unemployment insurance benefits.

ARRESTS/CITATIONS

Mark Nathan Olenek, 27, of the 1400 block of Red Coach Lane, Algonquin, was arrested and charged with theft of services after a cab driver reported around 7 a.m. on Oct. 30 that he had refused to pay the fare.


WINNETKA

INCIDENTS

RUSE HOME BURGLARY
Between 4:20 and 4:45 p.m. Nov. 3, multiple unidentified burglars identified themselves as village employees and stolen an unknown amount of cash and jewelry from a home in the 1200 block of Lindenwood Drive after the resident allowed one of them inside to "check for possible water contamination."

CRIMINAL DAMAGE
Someone damaged a street sign pole at the corner of Oak and Birch streets around 9 p.m. on Nov. 7, village staff discovered.

RETAIL THEFT
An employee of the Walgreens, 925 Green Bay Road, reported that an unidentified shoplifter stole three bottles of alcohol worth more than $130 combined from the store around 1:30 p.m. on Nov. 8.

IDENTITY THEFTS

  • On Nov. 2, a Pine Tree Lane resident reported someone used their identity to fraudulently apply for unemployment insurance benefits on Oct. 18.
  • On Nov. 3, residents of Edgewood Lane, Forest Glen Drive North, Hill Road and Chatfield Road all reported someone used their identity to fraudulently apply for unemployment insurance benefits.
  • On Nov. 4, Trapp Lane, De Windt Road and Vine Street residents reported someone used their identity to fraudulently apply for unemployment insurance benefits.
  • On Nov. 5, residents of Mt. Pleasant Street, Green Bay Road, Asbury Avenue, Rosewood Avenue and Westmoor Terrace reported their identities had been used in fraudulent filings for unemployment insurance benefits.
  • On Nov. 6, Orchard Lane, Ash Street, Westmoor Terrace, Green Bay Road, Waldren Road and Foxdale Avenue residents reported someone used their identity to fraudulently apply for unemployment insurance benefits.
  • On Nov. 7, a Willow Road resident reported someone had used their identity to apply for unemployment insurance benefits two days earlier.
  • On Nov. 8, residents of Hill Road and Asbury Court also reported their identities had been stolen and used to apply for unemployment insurance benefits.

ARRESTS/CITATIONS

George William Althoff, 23, of the 900 block of Ash Street, Winnetka, was arrested on Nov. 3 at the Winnetka Police Department and charged with two counts of aggravated battery to police officer and resisting arrest resulting in injury to police in connection with an investigation into an Oct. 23 incident.

Jezel M. Siracki, 23, of the 900 block of Green Bay Road, was arrested on the morning of Oct. 23 at his home after an officer verifying her identity discovered an active arrest warrant from Kane County connected with a warrant issued after she failed to appear in court for a charge of driving with a suspended license and other traffic offenses.

Andrew P. Schoof, 62, of the 600 block of Ivy Court, Kenilworth, was arrested around 4:15 a.m. on Nov. 6 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and driving under the influence of alcohol with a breath alcohol concentration of 0.08 or greater. He was also issued citations for failure to signal and running a stop sign.

A 30-year-old Chicago man was issued local ordinance citation for disorderly conduct in connection with an altercation with another person at a business in the 900 block of Green Bay Road.

A 19-year-old Glenview man was arrested around 10:40 p.m. on Nov. 6 in the 1000 block of Sheridan Road and charged with speeding 26 to 34 mph above the limit.
