Hear local experts talk on their field of expertise over lunch at Corner Cooks. This meeting's topic is Hard Boiled : The Classic American Detective. The British have Sherlock Holmes and Miss Marple. We Americans have Sam Spade, Philip Marlowe, Nick and Nora Charles. These are our "hard-boiled" American detectives — heavy-drinking, no-nonsense loners who are nevertheless honorable men with a soft spot for dames. Professor Cynthia Rutz will explore the code of this American brand of detective: this tough guy, good with a gun, whose "rude wit, disgust for sham, and contempt for pettiness" is so much a part of the American ideal.
