"Glencoe and the Civil War"

2011 marks the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War. To commemorate this pivotal event in our nation’s history, researchers from the Glencoe Historical Society will present “Glencoe and the Civil War” on Sunday, April 10, at 2:00 p.m. They’ll explain the connections linking the war and Glencoe residents, including how a little history detective work solved the mystery of two original 1860s letters found in the library’s archives regarding abolitionist and army chaplain Jeremiah Porter and his relationship to Glencoe’s Franklin Newhall.

The April 10 program, which is jointly presented by the Glencoe Historical Society and the Glencoe Public Library, will be offered at the library, 320 Park Ave., Glencoe.  The society also is organizing a Civil War exhibit that will open in May. Locals will want to keep an eye out in April for the historical society’s series of six posters on early Glencoe residents with a tie to the Civil War; these will appear at several locations around Glencoe, including in the library’s program room.
