Glencoe Historical Society's Annual Strawberry Sociable

The Glencoe Historical Society invites everyone in the community to attend the Eighth Annual Strawberry Sociable in the Eklund Garden, 377 Park Ave., Glencoe, Sunday, June 5, from 2:00-4:00 pm.

Featuring strawberries and ice cream in the garden that will be blooming with spring and summer flowers, the annual Sociable combines food with good friends and the opportunity to visit to two wonderful exhibits for the whole family.

Now showing in the 377 (Park Ave.) building (at the back of the Eklund Garden), is the recently opened communications exhibit, Stop the Presses, offering views of historic newspapers, and TV excerpts and radio broadcasts from the 20th century’s most exciting events – ranging from the moon landing to the first American appearance of the Beatles.  Also on display are the characters of “Gasoline Alley,” one of the longest running comics in U.S. history, drawn by a Glencoe resident. Children will enjoy making press hats or drawing their own cartoons.

In the historical society’s newest gallery in the 375 (Park Avenue) building is an exhibit on Glencoe residents who served in the Civil War. Diary excerpts are taken from one of the founders of Howard University, in Washington, D.C., to a former, beloved pastor of the Glencoe Union Church. Each of their lives was changed by his enlistment and service in the Northern Army of the Republic.

Everyone is invited. Admission is free. And the ice cream and strawberries will be cooling for a hot summer’s day. Call 847-835-0040 for questions.
