Join in the Village’s 84th annual Memorial Day celebration! The parade kicks off at 10:00 am on Monday, May 30 from the corner of Glendale and Elm Streets and heads east to the Village Green. A ceremony immediately follows on the Village Green. In case of inclement weather an indoor ceremony will be held at Skokie School, 520 Glendale Avenue, at 10:00 a.m. This year’s guest speaker is Winnetka Community Service Officer and Army Reserve Staff Sergeant, Arlene T. Walsh.
SSG Arlene T. Walsh is currently assigned to DET 3, 3100 Strategic Intelligence Group out of Ft. Sheridan, IL. She has been in the United States Army Reserve since 1992. She first started out as Motor Pool clerk and driver with Bravo Co 863rd Combat Heavy Engineer Battalion out of Harvey, IL. Since receiving her CDL license through the military she has driven vehicles including a Dozer, Grader, Vibrant Roller, 915 truck with a 40 ft trailer to carry her Recker and Cee (Wheeled tracker vehicle) and can drive up to a 10,000 lb forklift, which located her to Ft. Sheridan, IL.
SSG Walsh has held numerous positions such as: Nuclear Biological Chemical Non-commission Officer (NCO), Logistics NCO, Assistant Motor Pool NCO, Master Driver for heavy equipment operations, Army Physical Fitness NCO, additional duties include Weapons RSO for the 9mm, 50 cal, M16 ranges, Training NCO, Urinalysis Program Leader NCO , Equal Opportunity NCO, Unit Victim Advocate NCO, Property Book NCO, Physical Security NCO and currently is one of the Senior Intelligence Analyst for a military intelligence detachment DET 3 3100 Strategic Intelligence Group.
Since 2000, SSG Arlene T. Walsh has been a Community Service Officer for the Winnetka Police Department. She is a Child Passenger Safety Seat Technician, handles our dogs in town and occasionally you will see her at a school crossing.
Walsh was set to go on another military mission in August, this time to Afghanistan, but that mission had been recently cancelled and she will be state-side this year. Currently Walsh is training at Ft. Devens, MA during the month of May although she has been granted a 24 hour leave to participate in the Winnetka Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony.
