Fleeing Trio Arrested After Crashing Into Squad Cars: Blotters

NEW TRIER TOWNSHIP, IL — The following information comes from the Glencoe, Kenilworth, Northfield, Wilmette and Winnetka police departments as a record of police activity and incidents reported to the police. Criminal charges merely represent accusations by the state, and county prosecutors often choose to drop or reduce them. Updated information may be available from the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Anyone arrested is innocent unless later proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
GLENCOE
INCIDENTS
UNEMPLOYMENT FRAUD
A Hohlfelder Road resident reported on March 17 that someone had used their identity to fraudulently apply for unemployment insurance benefits.
SCAM ATTEMPT
An Eastwood Road resident reported on March 22 that an unidentified scammer had unsuccessfully attempted to deceive them via email to get money.

BIKE THEFT
Someone stole an unlocked bicycle from the 600 block of Vernon Avenue at some point prior to 4:30 p.m. March 23.
ARRESTS/CITATIONS
Thomas J. Gilhooly, 39, of the first block of Hilltop Avenue, Fox Lake, was arrested around 2:30 p.m. March 20 in the 2000 block of Frontage Road and charged with possession of fraudulent identification.

Kawann L. Moore, 35, of the 6000 block of South Bishop Street, Chicago; David D. Johnson, 37, of the 6900 block of South Cornell Avenue, Chicago; and Omar A. Smith, 33, of the 6100 block of South Washtenaw Avenue, Chicago, were arrested following a report of the burglary of a power tool from an unlocked car in the 800 block of Grove Street. Police reported Moore was the driver of a car that struck two squad cars. There were no injuries in the crash, and he was charged with felony theft of between $500 and $10,000 worth of government property, aggravated fleeing and eluding causing more than $300 in damage, misdemeanor fleeing and eluding, two counts of misdemeanor leaving the scene of an accident and driving on a suspended license. He was also issued citations for improper lane usage and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. His two passengers, Johnson and Smith, were each charged with misdemeanor theft.

CAR BURGLARY
Someone burglarized an unlocked car in the 700 block of Brier Street between 6:30 p.m. March 11 and 7 a.m. March 12.
UNEMPLOYMENT FRAUD
An Oxford Road resident reported on March 15 that someone had used their identity to fraudulently apply for unemployment insurance benefits.
NORTHFIELD
INCIDENTS
RETAIL DISTURBANCE
Police were called to the Mariano's, 1822 Willow Road, around 12:45 p.m. on March 16 for a report of an argument between staff and a customer. The disagreement was resolved and the customer completed their shopping, officers reported.
IDENTITY THEFT
The owner of a business with offices in the 700 block of West Frontage Road reported on March 16 that they had gotten a check from someone they did not recognize as a customer, along with a billing statement that included the business owner's personal information.
UNEMPLOYMENT FRAUD
A Maple Row resident reported on March 17 that they had received a letter about unemployment insurance benefits addressed to a person that did not live there and that they did not recognize.
UNREGISTERED SOLICITOR
Officers were called to the 100 block of Longmeadow Road around 9:30 a.m. on March 20 for a report of an unregistered solicitor. Officers explained to the person how they needed to register with the village.
NEIGHBOR DISPUTE
Police were called to the 1700 block of Harding Road around 7:15 p.m. for a report of a verbal argument between two neighbors. They agreed to avoid contact with one another, officers reported.

WILMETTE
INCIDENTS
UNEMPLOYMENT FRAUD
Nine reports of unemployment insurance benefits fraud were reported to Wilmette police between March 12 and March 19.
SIGN THEFT
An officer noticed an unspecified missing street sign at the intersection of Harvard Street and Schiller Avenue on March 12.
ELECTRONIC HARASSMENT
A Linden Avenue resident reported on March 13 that an acquaintance had sent them numerous unwanted messages and may have changed the settings on the resident's social media accounts.
PACKAGE THEFT
On March 15, a resident in the 300 block of Ridge Road reported that someone had stolen a recently delivered package from a common area in their residential complex.
SHOPLIFTING
A representative of The Bottle Shop, 1148 Central Ave., reported on March 18 that several retail items of unspecified value had been stolen at an unspecified time.
ARRESTS/CITATIONS
Jordan A. Spalding, 23, of the 1000 block of Forestview Lane, Glenview, was arrested around 10 p.m. on March 12 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol following a traffic stop in the 800 block of Sheridan Road. He refused to provide a breath sample and was also issued citations for speeding, no proof of insurance and illegal transportation of an open container of alcohol.
Gilberto Almanza, 22, of the 1300 block of Dewey Avenue, Evanston, was arrested around 1:30 a.m. on March 13 and charged with driving under the influence of drugs following a traffic stop in the 700 block of Ridge Road. He was also issued citations for no proof of insurance and improper lane usage.
A 20-year-old Chicago man was arrested around 8:45 p.m. on March 13 and charged with driving without a valid license following a traffic stop in the 1200 block of Green Bay Road. He was also issued citations for speeding, improper lane usage and no proof of insurance.
Christin L. Schmick, 39, of the 600 block of Sheridan Road, Highwood, was arrested around 11:45 p.m. on March 13 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and driving under the influence of alcohol with a breath alcohol concentration of 0.08 or greater after provided a breath sample indicating she had nearly three times the legal limit of alcohol in her system. Schmick was also issued citations for no lights and disobeying a traffic control device.
A 46-year-old Skokie man was arrested around 4 p.m. on March 17 and charged with driving without a valid license following a traffic stop in the 400 block of Green Bay Road. He was also issued a citation for avoiding a traffic control signal.

INCIDENTS
UNEMPLOYMENT FRAUD
Six Winnetka residents reported between March 13 and March 19 that their identities had been used to fraudulently apply for unemployment insurance benefits.
EMAIL SCAM
A Winnetka Park District employee discovered that someone had impersonated another employee via email and changed their direct deposit account information for a loss of nearly $5,000.
PHONE SCAM
A Heather Lane resident reported on March 19 that someone had called them that afternoon claiming to be a co-worker and deceived them into buying gift cards for a $500 loss.
ARRESTS/CITATIONS
A 50-year-old Skokie man who has never been issued a driver's license was arrested around 8:30 p.m. on March 20 near the intersection of Green Bay Road and Winnetka Avenue and charged with no valid driver's license.
A 24-year-old Chicago man was arrested around 11:15 a.m. on March 21 and charged with driving with a suspended license following a traffic stop in the 1000 block of Sheridan Road.
