On May 16th, 2020, Family Service of Glencoe (FSG) will host its annual benefit at Skokie Country Club in Glencoe with a new and exciting twist. With the help of Felix & Fingers Dueling Pianos, guests will be invited to bring their own musical style to the evening’s festivities by making song requests, going up on stage to sing or dance with the pianists, singing along with the crowd, or simply sitting back and enjoying the entertainment. The evening will focus on neighbors helping neighbors while socializing and connecting with fellow residents.

Why are mental health services even necessary in our community? Depression, anxiety, substance abuse, suicide, vaping. . . while perhaps not openly discussed, these challenges face our neighbors – adults, teens and children – daily and at a staggering rate. And they affect us all. Anxiety can look like defiance in a teenager or vaping to ease stress. Depression can cause physical distress that keeps a loved one home from work. Many people use substances to mask symptoms of mental disorders. Much of this goes unnoticed by the community. It is time to open the door to discussions of mental health to treat it and, just as importantly, prevent it.

FSG offers services to all who live or work in Glencoe through outreach and education programs, mental health counseling, and older adult services. The organization provides quality mental health services regardless of financial constraints by providing counseling subsidies to individuals who cannot afford the full cost of counseling. FSG focuses on early intervention and prevention, collaborating with community organizations, including District 35 schools, in order to treat the entire family unit. FSG also works alongside Glencoe Public Safety to provide immediate services to families in crisis.

So what is happening in our community? Central School adolescents walk to therapy sessions after school. Seniors gather at the library to take part in a monthly discussion group. Grade school parents meet at one another’s homes to discuss the ups and downs of parenting our kids. Adult children consult with FSG staff to seek assistance in caring for their aging parents. FSG helps in moments of immediate need but also provides proactive, preventative programming to foster a happy, healthy village.
