Half Of Illinois' Richest Places Are On North Shore

A new census analysis published in Bloomberg ranks America's richest communities. See if your town made the list.

Where are the richest places in America? It turns out the North Shore has 5 of the top 100 richest towns, according to a Bloomberg analysis of of U.S. Census data.

The report compared average household income for 2015, and found most of the richest spots are in California or the greater New York City area.

Atherton, California, a San Francisco Bay Area suburb, topped the nationwide list, On the opposite coast, Bloomberg notes that more than one-third of the country's richest households were located within 50 miles of New York City.

With an average household income of nearly $312,000, Winnetka was ranked as the richest town in Illinois, the report said. Glencoe was not far behind, with an average of $308,394. Household income was up 4.2 percent in Winnetka and 3.6 percent in Glencoe.

In total, 10 Illinois communities made the top 100 on the list of America's Richest Places. Half of them are on the North Shore.

Bloomberg ranked a total of 6,200 communities, evaluating them for inflation-adjusted household income. All ranked communities had a minimum population of 2,000.
