Here Are The 2019 Boston Marathon Runners From New Trier Area

NEW TRIER TOWNSHIP, IL — The 2019 Boston Marathon is officially underway and a dozen New Trier area residents took part this year. The men's wheelchair race crossed the start line Monday followed by women and elite women shortly afterwards.

More than 30,000 runners were expected to participate in the 123rd edition of the race. One registered Glencoe resident did not take part in the race. The route weaves from Hopkinton to Boston. The course begins on Main Street in the rural New England town and continues through Ashland, Framingham, Natick, Wellesley, Newton and Brookline before concluding in Boston, according to the marathon’s website.

In 2018, Des Linden became the first American to win the marathon in more than three decades. Her winning time was 2 hours 39 minutes and 54 seconds, the slowest in 40 years.

This year, the men's race was the closest since 1988, while the winner of the women's race led the pack by at least a half-mile throughout most of the race. Thunderstorms had threatened the Boston area, but the rain mostly stopped, for now. It was 61 degrees, with calm wins and overcast skies.

Linden was among the runners this year, along with Yuki Kawauchi, the men's defending champion. This year's event falls on the sixth anniversary of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing, which killed three people were killed and maimed hundreds more. A moment of silence was planned at 2:49 p.m., the time of the first explosion.
