Dear Editor:

At North Shore Senior Center, we have observed the debate over affordable housing in Winnetka with great interest. It is clear that housing has become increasingly less affordable for the average American in the past decade.  The situation is even more daunting for older adults who are living on fixed retirement incomes and for those who are approaching their retirement years.

This is the year that the first wave of the Baby Boomers, those born in 1946, will turn 65 – at the rate of 7,000 per day. Some of these individuals have adequate financial resources. Many do not.

For those who have only small pensions, Social Security and a few assets, affordable housing is essential to their well-being.

North Shore Senior Center supports safe, affordable housing for older adults, and recognizes it as a basic human need. Older adults should not have to make desperate choices about whether to pay the rent, buy nutritious food or purchase their medications.

In essence, safe and affordable housing is a key component of the wellness-centered lifestyle North Shore Senior Center promotes through its mission. Older adults deserve to live in their communities without sacrificing their financial security. We hope that the Village of Winnekta will give them the opportunity to do so.

Sincerely,

Marilyn Vocker
