North Shore Board’s Winter Event Gives Kids the gift of Camp

The North Shore Board of the Northwestern Settlement hosted a 'Winter Wonderland' fundraiser at Chalet Nursery in Wilmette November 18.

The North Shore Board of the Northwestern Settlement hosted a ‘Winter Wonderland’ fundraising event at Chalet Nursery in Wilmette to benefit the Northwestern Settlement House In The Wood camp program on Nov. 18.

Unable to host their annual Gala this year due to COVID-19, the North Shore Board partnered with local business Chalet Nursery, for an evening of seasonal shopping to kick-off the holiday season.

Attendees were able to purchase trees, holiday greenery and other decor and enjoy the festive atmosphere - with 15% of the proceeds generously donated by Chalet Nursery to benefit the House In The Wood camp. It was a win-win for the local business and Chicago’s youth.

“Without our Gala this year, we are so grateful for the generosity of North Shore families and Chalet, enabling us to keep the opportunity of camp alive for Chicago families,” said Sarah Boulos, President of the North Shore Board.

Since 1910 House In The Wood camp has been a nurturing, safe space that provides a life-changing experience for Chicago's youth, offering year-round outdoor education, a STEM curriculum and leaders in training curriculum.

“Covid has had a tremendous impact on camp - is not an exaggeration to say that camp simply might not exist at this point if it were not for the continuing dedication of the North Shore Board members and supporters,” said Ron Manderschied, President of the Northwestern Settlement.

The North Shore Board is an all-volunteer Northwestern Settlement auxiliary board founded in 1936. Members are committed to providing summer camp and outdoor education experiences to children from over 50 Chicago neighborhoods, and volunteer to support various Settlement programs throughout the year.

After living through uncertain times, House In The Wood camp experiences will be a welcome respite for Chicago youth in 2021.
