Northfield's Josselyn Center Responds to Robin Williams' Suicide

'If Robin Williams had broken his arm, it is likely he would have sought treatment immediately.'

The following was submitted by the Josselyn Center in Northfield

We at The Josselyn Center are saddened by the tragic passing of Robin Williams. Based on media reports, Robin Williams chose to commit suicide in the midst of depression and substance abuse. A man as famous, talented, and as funny as Mr. Williams apparently felt life was no longer worth living. It may be difficult for many of us to understand how Mr. Williams could feel this way given how dynamic his life appeared to be from the outside. To many, it is difficult to understand the depths and unique struggles of clinical depression. This is a condition that effects people who are rich, poor, old, and young. Depression does not discriminate – it effects people from all walks of life.

As President of a community mental health organization, the much publicized ending of Robin William’s life serves as a stark reminder that there are effective treatments for depression and other mental health diagnoses. If Robin Williams had broken his arm, it is likely he would have sought treatment immediately. We need to reduce the stigma attached to mental health issues to encourage other “Robin Williams” to seek mental health treatment today!
