Scammers demand gift cards; golf course trashed; dog bites bicyclist: New Trier Township Police Blotters

The following information comes from the Glencoe, Kenilworth, Northfield, Wilmette and Winnetka police departments as a record of police activity and incidents reported to the police. Criminal charges merely represent accusations by the state, and county prosecutors often choose to drop or reduce them. Updated information may be available from the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Anyone arrested is innocent unless later proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

INCIDENTS

WIRE FRAUD
A Sheridan Road resident reported on Nov. 13 that someone had gained access to their checking account and attempted to withdraw almost $3,000.

CREDIT CARD FRAUD
Someone used the credit card information of a Grove Street resident to buy $121 worth of food.

DOG BITE
A dog bit a person around 1 p.m. on Nov. 13 in the 300 block of Sunset Lane, police were told.

EMAIL SCAM
Staff at a Best Buy store stopped a Woodridge Lane resident from being scammed into buying store gift cards by an email that appeared to come from a friend.

IDENTITY THEFTS

  • On Nov. 12, residents of Sheridan Road and South Lane reported that someone used their identities to fraudulently apply for unemployment insurance benefits.
  • On Nov. 13, residents of Willow Tree Lane, Sylvan Road, Dundee Road, Grove Street, Vernon Avenue and Drexel Avenue reported fraudulent use of their identity to apply for unemployment insurance benefits.
  • On Nov. 14, residents of Grove Street, Longwood Avenue, Drexel Avenue, Greenwood Avenue, Apple Tree Lane and Bluff Street reported someone used their identities to fraudulently apply for unemployment insurance benefits.
  • On Nov. 15, residents of Euclid Avenue and Peach Tree Lane reported their identities were used to fraudulently apply for unemployment insurance benefits.
  • A Peach Tree Lane resident reported on Nov. 16 that someone used their identity to fraudulently apply for unemployment insurance benefits.
  • On Nov. 17, a Country Lane resident reported their identity was used in a fraudulent application for unemployment insurance benefits.
  • On Nov. 19, resident of Julia Court, Mayfair Lane and Oak Drive reported someone used their identities to fraudulently apply for unemployment insurance benefits.
  • A Sheridan Road resident reported on Nov. 21 that someone used their identity to fraudulently apply for unemployment insurance benefits.
  • On Nov. 23, residents of Eastwood Road and Longmeadow Lane reported someone used their identity in a fraudulent attempt to apply for unemployment insurance benefits.
  • An Oakdale Avenue resident reported on Nov. 24 that someone used their identity to open an account and apply for a small business loan.
  • On Nov. 24, a Crescent Lane resident reported that someone used their identity to fraudulently apply for unemployment insurance benefits.

ARRESTS/CITATIONS

James Y. Killingsworth, 26, of the 1400 block of Canal Street, Chicago, was arrested around 11 a.m. on Nov. 24 in the 3400 block of West 63rd Street in Chicago on an unspecified Cook County warrant.

Esteban Reyna-Abarca, 43, of the 800 block of Old Willow Road, Prospect Heights, was arrested around 10 a.m. on Nov. 23 in the 700 block of Vernon Avenue and charged with unlawful possession of stolen checks.

A 19-year-old Zion man was arrested around 11:30 p.m. on Nov. 19 near the intersection of Green Bay and Lake Cook roads.

PACKAGE THEFT
Someone stole two packages worth $250 from the front doorstep of a home in the 300 block of Cumberland Avenue at some point between 2 and 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 11.

IDENTITY THEFT

  • A Wayland Avenue resident reported someone used their identity to fraudulently apply for unemployment insurance benefits sometime in September.
  • Residents of Woodstock Avenue and Brier Street reported on Nov. 7 that someone used their identities in attempts to gain fraudulent unemployment insurance benefits.
  • A Warwick Road resident reported on Nov. 9 that someone used their identity in a fraudulent attempt to apply for unemployment insurance benefits.
  • On Nov. 10, a Brier Street resident reported someone used their identity to apply for fraudulent unemployment insurance benefits.
  • On Nov. 13, residents of Melrose Avenue and Sterling Road reported someone used their identities to fraudulently apply for unemployment insurance benefits.
  • On Nov. 14, an Abbotsford Road resident reported someone used their identity to apply for a small business load.
  • A Cumnor Road resident reported on Nov. 23 that someone had used their identity to fraudulently apply for unemployment insurance benefits.
  • On Nov. 25, an Essex Road resident reported that someone used their identity to apply for a fraudulent small business loan.

NORTHFIELD

INCIDENTS

DOG BITE
An Elder Lane resident reported that a dog ran out of the yard of a home in the 1600 block of Mount Pleasant Street around 1 p.m. and bit them while they were riding a bicycle. Police did not identify the dog's owner, who they said was issued citations carrying $130 in fines.

SUSPICIOUS SIGNATURE
Police are investigating a Nov. 11 report from an Edgwood Lane resident who said a roofing contractor their insurance company hired may have forged the signature of their recently dead parent on a repair contract.

THEFT
The owner of an unspecified business in the 1700 block of Ash Street reported on the afternoon of Nov. 13 that someone had stolen a garbage can.

UNWANTED CUSTOMER
Staff at the Northfield Post Office, 1787 Orchard Lane, called police around 12:15 p.m. on Nov. 20 to report that a patron was being rude. The customer left after officers arrived.

IDENTITY THEFTS

  • On Nov. 9, residents of Bosworth Lane and South Happ Road reported someone used their identities to apply for fraudulent unemployment insurance benefits.
  • On Nov. 10, a Canterbury Lane resident reported their identity had been used in a fraudulent application for unemployment insurance benefits.
  • On Nov. 11, residents of Coventry Road and Maple Row reported fraudulent applications for unemployment insurance benefits.
  • On Nov. 12, residents of Riverside Drive and Thackeray Lane reported unauthorized use of their identities in unemployment insurance benefit applications.
  • On Nov. 13, an Old Willow Road resident reported someone used their identity in an attempt to apply for fraudulent unemployment insurance benefits.
  • On Nov. 15, a Clover Lane resident and an employee of a South Happ Road business reported unauthorized attempts to apply for unemployment insurance benefits using their identities.
  • On Nov. 16, residents of Coventry Road and Orchard Lane reported someone used their identities to apply for fraudulent unemployment insurance benefits.
  • On Nov. 20, a pair of Jeffery Street resident reported someone used their identities to apply for fraudulent unemployment insurance benefits.

ARRESTS

A 57-year-old Skokie man was arrested around 3:30 p.m. Nov. 11 and charged with driving with a suspended license following a traffic stop near the intersection of Willow and Wagner roads. He was also issued a citation for speeding 45 mph in a 30 mph zone.

A 56-year-old Winnetka woman was arrested around 6 p.m. on Nov. 17 and charged with driving with a suspended license following a traffic stop in the 1500 block of Willow Road. She was also issued a citation for having only one headlight.


WILMETTE

INCIDENTS

HOME BURGLARIES

  • Someone broke into a home in the 2800 block of Lake Avenue at some point between 2:15 and 3:09 p.m. on Nov. 6. Nothing appeared stolen at the time of the report.
  • A resident in the 2400 block of Lake Avenue reported that a man showed up wearing a construction vest and somehow managed to talk his way into a home. The resident believed someone else burglarized the house while they were distracted. Police did not specify what ruse the burglars used.
  • On Nov. 14, a resident in the 3500 block of Greenwood Avenue reported that a burglar managed to lure them into the backyard by claiming there was a problem with the water supply. The burglar, who was described as 5 feet, 6 inches tall, bald and white with a medium build, talked his way back into the house. Upon his return, another resident noticed two other burglars leave the house after ransacking its bedroom. All three were gone before police arrived.

HARASSMENT
An employee in the 3500 block of Lake Avenue reported on Nov. 6 that a former acquaintance had threatened them at work and via social media.

COMPUTER SCAM
On Nov. 11, a resident in the 2900 block of Central Avenue reported falling victim to a scam. Someone claiming to represent an unspecified technology company had managed to obtain personal information and account information related to the resident's website.

SHOPLIFTING

  • Staff at the Walgreens, 811 Green Bay Road, reported around 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 11 that an unidentified couple had stolen unspecified items and fled in a white Chevrolet Impala. An officer spotted the fleeing car headed south on Green Bay Road but it refused to stop and drove away.
  • An employee at the Bed, Bath and Beyond store at 3232 Lake Ave. reported on Nov. 16 that an unidentified women had stolen unspecified items from the store at an unspecified time.

THEFTS

  • A resident in the 100 block of Dupee Place reported on Nov. 12 that someone stole two packages that had been delivered by UPS at an unspecified time.
  • On Nov. 17, a resident in the 1800 block of Wilmette Avenue reported that someone stole a recently delivered package from their porch.
  • Someone took a bicycle that was left unlocked at the bike racks at St. Francis School, 808 Linden Ave., at some point prior to Nov. 17.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE

  • A resident in the 2400 block of Lake Avenue reported on Nov. 7 that someone damaged a string of lights in their backyard at some point.
  • A resident in the 1000 block of Forest Avenue reported on Nov. 8 that someone had scratched their car. The resident was not sure where it had happened.
  • On Nov. 9, an employee of McKenzie School, 649 Prairie Ave., reported that someone damaged the shingles on a storage shed at the south side of the school.

CAR BURGLARIES

  • On Nov. 6, police were told three unlocked cars were burglarized — one in the 1900 block of Washington Avenue and two in the 2000 block of Lake Avenue. Police did not specify when the burglarizes were believed to have occurred, and nothing was reported stolen.
  • Someone stole cash from an unlocked car in the 1100 block of Michigan Avenue on or before Nov. 7.
  • On Nov. 12, police were told unlocked cars were burglarized in the 800 block of Sheridan Road and Linden Avenue. Unspecified personal items were reported stolen. Police did not specify when the burglaries occurred.
  • Three cars appeared burglarized in the 700 block of Lavergne Avenue at some point prior to 3:15 a.m. on Nov. 15.
  • Around 1 a.m. on Nov. 20, a resident in the 200 block of 9th Street noticed an unidentified man or boy go into the resident's unlocked car and run away. A pair of sunglasses was reported missing from the car.

IDENTITY THEFTS

  • On Nov. 6, residents of Central Avenue, Greenleaf Avenue, Millbrook Lane, Sheridan Road and Leamington Avenue reported someone used their identities to fraudulently apply for unemployment insurance benefits.
  • On Nov. 7, residents of Chestnut and Lawler avenues reported fraudulent attempts to apply for unemployment insurance benefits using their identity.
  • A Locust Road resident reported on Nov. 10 that someone had used their identity to open fraudulent accounts and withdraw an unspecified amount of money from their personal accounts starting in March.
  • On Nov. 10, a Washington Avenue resident reported that someone used their identities to fraudulently apply for unemployment insurance benefits.
  • On Nov. 11, residents of Park Avenue, Wilshire Drive, Lake Avenue, Hibbard Road and Kenilworth Avenue reported their identities were used to fraudulently apply for unemployment insurance benefits.
  • On Nov. 12, residents of Park Avenue, Iroquois Road, Central Park Avenue, New Trier Court and Pomona Lane reported someone used their identities to fraudulently apply for unemployment insurance benefits.
  • A Thornwood Avenue resident reported on Nov. 12 that someone had used their identity to obtain a small business loan.
  • On Nov. 16, an Oakwood Avenue resident reported that they received a debit card for which they had never applied.

ARRESTS/CITATIONS

Candy L. Shane, 44, of the 300 block of Ridge Road, Wilmette, was arrested around 11:30 p.m. on Nov. 7 and charged with retail theft and possession of drug paraphernalia.


WINNETKA

INCIDENTS

CRIMINAL DAMAGE
An employee of the Winnetka Park District discovered that someone damaged several areas of the golf course at 1300 Oak St. between 7:30 a.m. Nov. 21 and 7:30 a.m. Nov. 22. Flags, lights and tee markers were stolen for a loss of more than $450. Repair costs were estimated at $2,140.

SCAMS

  • A Merrill Street resident reported on Nov. 12 that someone claiming to be a representative of "Amazon Security" had tried to get them to deposit money into a checking account to resolve some kind of discrepancy with the resident's account.
  • A resident in the 600 block of Lincoln Avenue reported that someone claiming to be a computer support staffer called them, asked for personal information and demanded gift cards to resolve an unspecified discrepancy with the account.

THEFTS

  • Someone stole a street sign from the corner of Ash Street and Glendale Avenue between Oct. 8 and Nov. 8, costing the village $50.
  • Between 1:49 and 7:33 p.m. on Nov. 11, someone stole two packages delivered to a front porch in the 1200 block of Elm Street for a loss of about $115.
  • The contents of two packages delivered to the 1100 block of Oak Street were stolen between 4:51 and 7:53 p.m. on Nov. 11. Officers were unsure what was inside at the time of the report.
  • A resident in the first block of Locust Road reported that someone stole a pair of packages delivered between 4 and 5 p.m. on Nov. 11 for a loss of more than $250.

CAR BURGLARIES

  • Someone burglarized two unlocked cars parked in driveways in the 600 block of Garland Avenue around 1 a.m. on Nov. 13. Nothing was listed as stolen at the time of the report.
  • Around 2:15 a.m. on Nov. 13, someone burglarized two unlocked cars in the 200 block of Ridge Avenue. Nothing was reported stolen from within.

IDENTITY THEFTS

  • On Nov. 9, residents of Oak Street, Vine Street, Edgewood Lane and Forest Glen Drive, as well as someone at Village Hall, reported their identities were used in fraudulent applications for unemployment insurance benefits.
  • On Nov. 10, residents of Asbury Avenue, Cedar Street, Cherry Street, Myrtle Street and Sunview Lane reported their identities had been used to fraudulently apply for unemployment insurance benefits.
  • On Nov. 11, residents of Woodland and Garland avenues reported that someone used their identity to apply for fraudulent unemployment insurance benefits.
  • On Nov. 12, residents of Sunset Road and Lincoln Avenue reported their identities were used in fraudulent applications for unemployment insurance benefits.
  • On Nov. 13, residents of Green Bay Road, Poplar Street, Old Green Bay Road, Dinsmore Road and Sunset Road reported someone used their identities in fraudulent unemployment insurance benefit applications.
  • On Nov. 14, residents of Broadmeadow Road, Lincoln Avenue, Sunset Road and Elm Street reported their identities were used in fraudulent applications for unemployment insurance benefits.
  • On Nov. 15, a Forest Street resident reported their identity had been stolen and used to apply for unemployment insurance benefits.
  • On Nov. 16, residents of Elder Lane, Ash Street, Sunset Road, Cherry Street and Indian Hill Road all reported their identities were used in fraudulent applications for unemployment insurance benefits.
  • On Nov. 17, residents of Maple Street and Willow Road reported someone used their identities to fraudulently apply for unemployment insurance benefits.
  • On Nov. 18, residents of Hawthorn lane and Burr Avenue reported their identities had been used to fraudulently apply for unemployment insurance benefits.
  • On Nov. 19, residents of Elm Street, Winnetka Mews and Cedar Street reported their identities were used in fraudulent applications for unemployment insurance benefits.
  • On Nov. 20, a Gordon Terrace resident reported someone used their identity to apply for unemployment insurance benefits.
  • On Nov. 21, residents of Prospect Avenue and Locust Street reported their identities had been stolen and used to apply for unemployment insurance benefits.
  • On Nov. 23, a Humboldt Avenue resident reported that someone used their identity to fraudulently apply for unemployment insurance benefits.

ARRESTS/CITATIONS

A 66-year-old Fox Lane man was arrested around 10 a.m. Nov. 9 and charged with driving with a suspended license following a traffic stop in the 1500 block of Tower Road. He was also issued a citation for speeding.

A 24-year-old Mount Prospect man was arrested around 11:30 p.m. on Nov. 9 and charged with speeding 26 to 34 mph over the limit in the 1000 block of Sheridan Road.

A 42-year-old Glencoe man was arrested around 2:20 p.m. on Nov. 10 and charged with speeding 26 to 34 mph over the limit in the 1100 block of Sheridan Road.

A 21-year-old Kenilworth man was arrested around 12:45 p.m. on Nov. 21 and charged with speeding 26 to 34 mph over the limit in the 1100 block of Sheridan Road.
