Scammers Threaten To Spread Nude Photography: Blotters

Over $10,000 stolen in online scam; vaping device discovered, destroyed; shoplifters snatch alcohol, clothing: New Trier Area Police Blotter

NEW TRIER TOWNSHIP, IL — The following information comes from the Glencoe, Kenilworth, Northfield, Wilmette and Winnetka police departments as a record of police activity and incidents reported to the police. Criminal charges merely represent accusations by the state, and county prosecutors often choose to drop or reduce them. Updated information may be available from the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Anyone arrested is innocent unless later proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

GLENCOE

INCIDENTS

UNEMPLOYMENT FRAUD
Seven Glencoe residents reported someone had used their identity to apply fraudulently for unemployment benefits between Feb. 4 and Feb. 9.

AUTO THEFT
Someone got into an unlocked garage in the 400 block of Sheridan Road prior to 7 a.m. Feb. 5 and stole an unlocked Mercedes with a key fob left inside. The car was later recovered.

COMPUTER SCAM
A Jackson Avenue resident reported that they were tricked into allowing someone to gain access to their computer at some point prior to the morning of Feb. 5. A scammer managed to steal between $10,000 and $100,000.

REVENGE PORN SCAM

  • A Vernon Avenue resident reported on the morning of Feb. 5 that someone deceived them into sending nude photographs and then threatened to send to family members of the resident.
  • An Old Elm Place resident reported on Feb. 9 that someone sent them an email claiming to have a pornographic video of the resident and threatening to publicly release it in an abortive blackmail attempt.

IDENTITY THEFT

  • A Forestway Drive resident reported on Feb. 4 that someone used their identity to apply for disability benefits.
  • An Old Elm Place resident reported on Feb. 5 that they received a tax document from PayPal indicating that they had received money that was never disbursed.

KENILWORTH

INCIDENTS

UNEMPLOYMENT FRAUD
Police received five reports from village residents that their identities had been stolen and fraudulently used to apply for unemployment insurance benefits between Jan. 29 and Feb. 5.

IDENTITY THEFT
An Exmoor Road resident reported on Feb. 9 that someone fraudulently applied for a small business loan using their identity.


NORTHFIELD

INCIDENTS

UNEMPLOYMENT FRAUD
Seven Northfield residents reported between Feb. 1 and Feb. 3 that someone had used their identity to apply fraudulently for unemployment benefits.

CREDIT CARD FRAUD
A Robin Hood Lane resident reported on Feb. 1 that someone had made unauthorized charges on their credit card.

RETAIL THEFT
An unidentified man stole two bundles of firewood worth about $10 from the Mariano's, 1822 Willow Road, at some point prior to 2 a.m. Feb. 4.

VAPING DEVICE DISCOVERED
Staff at the Illinois Department of Transportation maintenance garage at 2 S. Happ Road reported around 11:30 a.m. on Feb. 4 that they discovered a cannabis vaporizer, which they turned over to police for destruction.

WILMETTE

INCIDENTS

UNEMPLOYMENT FRAUD
Forty-seven reports of unemployment insurance benefits fraud were reported to Wilmette police between Jan. 29 and Feb. 5.

SHOPLIFTING
Staff at the Jewel-Osco, 411 Green Bay Road, reported around 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 29 reported that someone had stolen alcohol from the store around 7 p.m. and had left before officers arrived.

CREDIT CARD FRAUD
An Elmwood Avenue resident reported on Feb. 1 that an unidentified person had made an unauthorized charge on their credit card.

FRAUD
A Greenwood Avenue resident reported on Feb. 1 that they received a debit card in the mail that they have never requested.

HARASSMENT
A Skokie Boulevard resident reported on Feb. 2 that an unidentified person had sent their minor child several harassing text messages on Jan. 1.

ARRESTS/CITATIONS

A 34-year-old Chicago man was arrested around 8:30 a.m. on Feb. 3 and charged with driving with a suspended license and ticketed for speeding following a traffic stop in the 600 block of Green Bay Road.

A 48-year-old Chicago man was arrested around noon on Feb. 3 and charged with driving without a valid license following a traffic stop in the 800 block of Green Bay Road. He was also issued citations for improper lane usage and cell phone use.


WINNETKA

INCIDENTS

UNEMPLOYMENT FRAUD
Twenty-two reports of unemployment insurance benefits fraud were reported to Winnetka police between Feb. 1 and Feb. 5.

IDENTITY THEFT
A Poplar Street resident reported on Feb. 1 that someone used their identity to open up an unauthorized AT&T account and accrue nearly $2,500 in charges.

SHOPLIFTING

  • An employee at a store in the 500 block of Lincoln Avenue reported on Feb. 1 that someone had stolen more than $1,600 worth of clothing.
  • Staff reported that someone stole more than $725 worth of liquor from the Walgreens at 925 Green Bay Road shortly before 4:45 p.m. on Feb. 1.

ARRESTS/CITATIONS

A 46-year-old Chicago man was arrested around 4 a.m. on Feb. 6 in the 100 block of Sheridan Road and charged with driving on a suspended driver's license and cited for operating an uninsured motor vehicle and improper display of registration.
