Thrifting Tips from the "Queen of Rummage"

The coordinator of the Christ Church Rummage Sale, one of the largest in the country, shares her best tips for snagging a good deal.

Charlotte McGee, "Queen of Rummage" and Rummage Sale Coordinator at Christ Church, knows everything there is to know about finding a good deal — she's been working at one of the nation's largest rummage sales for 20 years. Lucky for Patch readers, she was willing to share some of her top tips. 

  • "Here's the key — get the map," McGee said. "Get the map and strategize. Plan your attack!" She recommends checking out the online map of the sale — as well as a list of departments — so you know what you're doing. 
  • "Really come early," she said. "If you work, we open at 7 — you can get an hour of power shopping in!" McGee said that people start lining up around 5 a.m. 
  • "We do have a bag check," McGee advised shoppers. 
  • "[Personally] My favorite department is accessories — I'm in to scarves and the accessories are incredible!" 
Rena Kowalski, who runs the public relations for the event recommends that shoppers read her blog, "North Shore Rummage" to plan out the sales months in advance. She also recommends checking out the jewelry room early. 

This year's sale will be held Thurs., Oct. 3 from 7 a.m. until 3 p.m.
