Township Children’s Book Drive Tops 16,000 —A New Record

The New Trier Township Kids Who Read Rise Summer 2020 Children’s Book Drive shattered all previous summer collections during a one-day event held July 10th. A contactless drive-through format was organized in the parking lot of the Winnetka Presbyterian Church to minimize the risk of spreading the Coronavirus.

The community responded heartily, donating approximately 16,500 books in a span of four hours. Bernie’s Book Bank, the recipient of the collection is a Lake Bluff based not-for-profit that sources and distributes books to at-risk children whose families often lack discretionary income for book purchases.

Alan Goldberg, Supervisor of New Trier Township stated, “The North Shore will not permit something like COVID-19 to squelch its neighborly spirit. Our partnership with the Winnetka Presbyterian Church and the wonderful staff from Bernie’s Book Bank brought in an incredible amount of books for the kids. We want to thank everyone who donated.”
