The past few weeks have been unseasonably hot and dry, so trees haven’t been getting the water they need from rain. The lack of rain could lead to the death of newly planted trees and could cause even mature trees to struggle. Large trees already in decline or those that have their roots impacted by construction are especially at risk. You can pitch in by watering the trees around your house and on the Village-owned parkway adjacent to your property. The Village regularly waters newly-planted parkway trees, but the exceptionally dry weather means that trees need all the water they can get. It is best to water early in the morning or late in the day. Watering in the middle of the day can lead to much of the water evaporating before it reaches the tree. Set a hose next to the tree so that it soaks the ground at each watering, ensuring that the water reaches all of the tree’s roots. If you have questions, please contact Andrew Lueck, Village Forester (847-716-3289).
