NEW TRIER TOWNSHIP, IL — The following information comes from the Glencoe, Kenilworth, Northfield, Wilmette and Winnetka police departments as a record of police activity and incidents reported to the police. Criminal charges merely represent accusations by the state, and county prosecutors often choose to drop or reduce them. Updated information may be available from the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Anyone arrested is innocent unless later proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

GLENCOE

INCIDENTS

UNEMPLOYMENT FRAUD
Five Glencoe residents reported someone had used their identity in a fraudulent unemployment insurance benefit application between March 10 and March 17.

IDENTITY THEFT
A Woodridge Lane resident reported on the evening of March 15 that an unidentified fraudster had scammed them into providing personally identifying information.

ARRESTS/CITATIONS

Johnathan P. Mogbo-Bryant, 36, of the first block of 8th Avenue, Maywood, was arrested around 11:45 p.m. on March 15 in the 4000 block of Roosevelt Road in Hillside and charged with aggravated possession of a stolen auto and identity theft of more than $10,000. No further information about the case was immediately available from police.


KENILWORTH

INCIDENTS

There have been no incidents or arrests in the village reported by the Kenilworth Police Department since March 1. Police reminded the public to lock up their vehicles: "Unlocked doors will continue to draw offenders into the neighborhood, even if you have nothing to lose in your car. Every time these offenders are on our streets there is a chance for a confrontation with an unsuspecting resident."

NORTHFIELD

INCIDENTS

UNEMPLOYMENT FRAUD
Two Northfield residents reported between March 8 and March 14 that someone fraudulently applied for unemployment insurance benefits using their identity.

SUSPICIOUS BILLING
A resident in the 1700 block of Northfield Square reported on March 8 that there had been a large increase in electricity use at their home during a period of time during which they were out of town.

'ZOOM-BOMBING'
An administrator at Sunset Ridge School, 525 Sunset Ridge Road, reported on March 8 that unidentified accounts logged into the school's remote learning session and used "inappropriate language." School officials later changed their procedures to limit unauthorized access to class and did not ask police to further investigate.

UNAUTHORIZED VISITOR
Police were called to New Trier High School, 7 S. Happ Road, for a report of a man who had tried to come onto campus without permission. He explained he was an alumnus and wanted to visit, and officers explained he needed to first make an appointment with school officials.

IDENTITY THEFT
An Old Farm Road resident reported on March 12 that someone had opened an unauthorized Verizon Wireless account in their name and used it to buy an iPhone.

WILMETTE

INCIDENTS

UNEMPLOYMENT FRAUD
Eight reports of unemployment insurance benefits fraud were reported to Wilmette police between March 5 and March 12.

IDENTITY THEFT
A Riverside Drive resident reported on March 8 that someone had used their social security number to filed a fraudulent 2020 income tax return.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE

  • Someone shattered a window of a car parked in the 200 block of 3rd Street between March 4 and March 5.
  • Someone burned a portion of a park bench in the 700 block of Locust Road and spray painted graffiti on the bench and on a garbage can between March 5 and March 6 at the community playfield in the 700 block of Locust Road.
  • On March 8, residents of the 200 block and 300 block of Greenleaf Avenue reported that someone had broken the window to their vehicles.

THEFTS

  • Between March 3 and March 5, someone stole steel fencing and posts and a propane heater from the side of a home in the 1800 block of Wilmette Avenue for a loss of about $400.
  • An officer discovered an unspecified missing street sign at the corner of Ouilmette Lane and Schiller Avenue and reported it to village staff on March 9. Police gave no indication of when it may have been stolen.

ARRESTS/CITATIONS

A 21-year-old Evanston man was arrested around 6:15 p.m. on March 5 and charged with driving with a suspended license following a traffic stop in the 1100 block of Wilmette Avenue. He was also ticketed for disobeying a lane control signal.

A 19-year-old Evanston woman was arrested around 11 a.m. on March 5 and charged with driving with a suspended license following a traffic stop near Green Bay Road and Central Avenue. Officers also issued her citations for improper passing on the shoulder and no front or rear plate.

A 31-year-old Rockford man was arrested around noon on March 5 and charged with driving with a suspended license following a traffic stop in the 3200 block of Lake Avenue. He was also issued citations for expired registration and no proof of insurance.

A 35-year-old Northfield man was arrested around 10:30 a.m. on March 8 and charged with driving without a valid license after he was pulled over for an expired plate in the 900 block of Illinois Road. He was also cited for expired registration.

Patricia Schumann, 57, of the 700 block of Laurel Avenue, Wilmette, was arrested around 10:30 a.m. on March 8 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol following a traffic stop in the 600 block of Poplar Drive. Officers reported she showed signs of being impaired and refused to submit to field sobriety testing. She was also issued citations for failure to signal and driving an uninsured vehicle.

A 19-year-old Hoffman Estates woman was taken into custody shortly after 10 p.m. March 9 on an zero tolerance violation after officers suspected she had been drinking due to the presence of open alcohol containers in her car. The motorist also produced a breath sample indicating she had illegally consumed alcohol. She was issued citations for disobeying a stop sign and illegal transportation of an open container of alcohol by a driver.


WINNETKA

INCIDENTS

UNEMPLOYMENT FRAUD
Five Winnetka residents reported between March 6 and March 12 that their identities had been used to fraudulently apply for unemployment insurance benefits.

CAR BURGLARY
A resident in the 900 block of Spruce Street reported that someone rummaged through the interior of a car left unlocked in the driveway between 5:45 p.m. March 11 and

UBER SCAM
A resident reported someone stole $380 from their account by claiming to be a representative of the ride-hailing corporation Uber and asking for their account information.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE
Someone caused $1,500 in damage to the wooden fence of a deck in the 1400 block of Tower Road between 3 p.m. March 11 and 1 p.m. March 13.

THEFT

  • A staffer at Winnetka Congregational Church, 725 Pine St., reported around 2 p.m. on March 8 that someone had stolen a flag and a flagpole from the property on three separate occasions between Jan. 18 and March 3 for a loss of $150.
  • Someone stole several documents and damaged clothing items left at a home in the 800 block of Green Bay Road between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m. on March 10 for a loss of $500, police were told.

ARRESTS/CITATIONS

Tanner Samuel Peters, 19, of the first block of Indian Hill Road, Wilmette, was arrested around 1:45 a.m. and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and driving under the influence of drugs following a traffic stop in the 900 block of Hill Road. He was also issued a citation for failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash.
