Cooling Centers: Where To Find Hot Weather Relief In Kendall Co.

With temperatures in the 90s and a heat index that could hit 110, here's what you need to know to stay safe.

KENDALL COUNTY, IL — It's heating up here in northern Illinois, and while temperatures will "only" be in the 90s, the heat index in the coming days could reach a scorching 110 degrees. When it's that hot, it's important to keep cool, avoid overexertion and be sure not to overheat.

If you find yourself without power or without air conditioning, it might be a good idea to find a place to cool off.

Stay safe in the heat

Ready.gov advises resident to prepare for extreme heat:

  • Find places in your community where you can go to get cool.
  • Keep your home cool by doing the following:
    • Cover windows with drapes or shades.
    • Weather-strip doors and windows.
    • Use window reflectors, such as aluminum foil-covered cardboard, to reflect heat back outside.
    • Add insulation to keep the heat out.
    • Use attic fans to clear hot air.
    • Install window air conditioners and insulate around them.
  • Learn to recognize the signs of heat-related illness.

To keep yourself safe in extreme heat:

  • Find air conditioning.
  • Avoid strenuous activities.
  • Watch for heat illness.
  • Wear light clothing.
  • Check on family members and neighbors.
  • Drink plenty of fluids.
  • Watch for heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke.
  • Never leave people or pets in a closed car.
