Crusade Burger Owners Halt Plans For Pizza Restaurant: Report

1836 Drink Lab, owned by the group behind Sovereign restaurant and Crusade, closed for good in March and was slated to reopen as a pizzeria.

YORKVILLE, IL — Plans to convert a restaurant featuring "elevated cocktails and food" in downtown Yorkville into a pizzeria have been canceled months after they were announced. In March, the owners of 1836 Drink Lab & Provisions announced that the restaurant — which just opened in December — was closed permanently but would reopen as Pizza Riot, a family friendly pizzeria offering food and arcade games.

But this week, Yorkville economic development consultant Lynn Dubajic told the city council's economic development committee that those plans have been halted, according to Kendall County Now.

Instead, the restaurant group that owned 1836 Drink Lab, Minor Threat, will install a new interior entrance at another restaurant it owns in Yorkville, Crusade Burger Bar, according to the outlet. 1836 was located in the space formerly occupied by Cobblestone Bakery & Bistro, which closed in 2015.

Minor Threat also owns Sovereign restaurant in downtown Plainfield.

Dubajic said they longer plan to open Pizza Riot at the former 1836 location, 101 W. Van Emmon St., and that plans are in the works to find another tenant for the location.

In March, the 1836 Drink Lab Facebook page announced the pizza restaurant, drawing mixed response.

"Pizza, Beer and Games will be making its debut some time before summer….," the post said. "We've decided we want a place that our children will be proud of, while your children have fun and you enjoy the best pizza this side of the cook county border."

In April, the logo for the proposed Pizza Riot was also unveiled on the Facebook page. As of Sunday night, the page appeared to have been deleted.

The Minor Threat partners were sued by investors in their original Plainfield restaurant, Sovereign, last August. The suit accuses the restaurateurs of improperly funneling thousands of dollars in investments to launch several more businesses, including 1836. That case is still pending in Will County, with a status hearing set for June 28, according to court records.
