Watch Out For 'Get To Know Me Better' Facebook Scam: Sheriff

Kendall County Sheriff warns people there could be more to those 'get to know me' Facebook quizzes than you think.

YORKVILLE, IL — The Kendall County Sheriff's Office warned residents Tuesday about a Facebook scam. Some posts that ask you for personal information may seem like a "get-to-know-each-other better" kind of exercise, but could actually be a phishing scam to find out security answers for lost passwords and new accounts.

Questions like, "Who was your childhood best friend?" "What is your favorite color?" and "What was your teacher's name?" are the same questions used when setting up accounts online. People could be giving answers to their security questions without realizing it. The scammers can build a profile of the victim and use the information to hack accounts or open new lines of credit in your name.

Experts say to protect yourself from hackers, keep secure passwords and change them often. Never click on a suspicious post or message. Not everything is a scam, of course, but it's best to stay away just in case, the sheriff's office recommends.
