Ankeny's Springwood 9 Theatres To Be Sold By Fridley Theatres

ANKENY, IA. -- Fridley Theatres announced this morning that its Springwood 9 Theatres in Ankeny will be sold next month to a group that earlier announced plans to build its own theater complex and bowling center in the community. That company, B & B Theatres of Kansas City, announced in June that its 12-screen theater will open in 2018.

Fridley said via social media that B & B “will utilize the Springwood in preparations for the opening of their new theatre in the Prairie Trail development." A company spokeswoman told Patch that their understanding is the Springwood 9 will remain open as the new theaters are built.

The Fridley notice said of the sale: “It is with regret and sadness that we share this information, after having served the Ankeny community for 28 years. We sincerely appreciate the loyal patronage of our valued guests."

The sale will be effective Oct. 16.

Fridley also operates theaters in Des Moines, Pleasant Hill and Indianola in central Iowa and is Iowa’s largest locally-owned movie theater company. The company is in the final planning stages of a new 15-screen theater complex that will open in late 2018 or early 2019 in Waukee. That project will have an IMAX auditorium, multiple in-seat food and beverage theatres and a full restaurant and bar.

"Thank you for helping us to deliver a hometown theatre experience and to bring the magic of the movies to Ankeny," the Fridley announcement said.

The Springwood 9 is located at 2829 S. Ankeny Blvd.
