Iowa National Guard Impacted as Government Shutdown Begins

Many of the National Guard troops stationed at Camp Dodge in Johnston are expected to be furloughed today.

Johnston will feel the effects of the government shutdown that began at midnight Tuesday.

Many of the National Guard troops stationed at Camp Dodge in Johnston are expected to be furloughed today. About 1,000 of Iowa's troops will be put on leave, the Des Moines Register reported.

Another 7,500 part-time soldiers and airmen could also be impacted if the Iowa National Guard has to cancel training and other duties, a possibility depending on how long the shutdown lasts.

The 140 active duty Iowa National Guard troops currently serving in Afghanistan and Honduras will still receive pay.

The Des Moines Register has a list of other impacts Iowans may feel as the shutdown continues.

On a slightly lighter note, the shutdown was no match for Iowan members of the Greatest Generation. Veterans from Story County were on an honor flight trip to Washington D.C. today, where with the help of politicians on both sides of the aisle they visited the officially closed World War II Memorial.
