Preview of Tonight's Big Four Classic

Tonight's big event in Des Moines will (almost) settle the battle for basketball supremacy in the state of Iowa.

As written by Connor Ferguson

Multiple storylines are headlining tonight’s Big Four Classic matchup, including the news that broke Thursday that the event will continue into 2017.

It’s a big fight feel in Des Moines this year for the classic, with Iowa State - Drake warming up for the main event in Iowa - UNI. Expect the sellout crowd to arrive a little late, but also to be fully energized for the second game.

Preliminary Fight

#13 Iowa State (8-1) vs. Drake (2-8)

The Cyclones shouldn’t have a problem with the Bulldogs today, but they should look for Jameel McKay to make a big impact in his debut. The 6’9 junior is back for his first game eligible since he transferred from Marquette.

Iowa State Head Coach, Fred Hoiberg, announced that McKay would be coming off the bench, and that he would keep the lineup the same.

Iowa State is riding a five game win streak coming into the game, while Drake just got their second win against Jackson State.

The win was exactly what the Bulldogs needed prior to facing the Cyclones, as their schedule is starting to get much more difficult.

Who wins: Iowa State takes down Drake and meanwhile we see great performances from a player on each side.

The Main Event

Iowa (8-3) vs. Northern Iowa (9-1)

The Big Four Classic has finally delivered a game making headlines before tip off. The 9-1 Northern Iowa Panthers are a wildcard in this matchup.

UNI has had a multitude of strong wins this season, but snapped a 9 game win streak when they lost to VCU. Put that under the, “Quality Losses,” folder.

Iowa, however has played consistently, beating the small schools, but receiving three losses to three ranked opponents. Iowa’s best win however, came on the road to a then #12 North Carolina team.

Who wins: All in all, this game is a toss up and too hard to call, but Iowa should get the nod since they’ve played more ranked opponents and have the big game experience.
