PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MD — More than 70 percent of Prince George's adults have gotten at least one dose of the coronavirus vaccine, County Executive Angela Alsobrooks announced Friday. About 63 percent of adult Prince Georgians are fully immunized, data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show. Around 51 percent of the county is completely inoculated, the CDC informed.

“Hitting this milestone, which was officially achieved on July 4th, is a big step towards declaring the County’s freedom from the COVID-19 pandemic,” Alsobrooks said in a press release. “As we continue our efforts to make sure that every eligible resident is protected from COVID, we are determined to not only emerge from this pandemic better prepared for the next public health crisis, but also grow and thrive as a stronger, healthier community.”

Vaccine Outreach

Alsobrooks attributed the feat to her Countywide Vaccine Distribution and Education Initiative. This effort conducts outreach to densely populated communities with lower immunization rates and incomes.

Since April 22, canvassers have made 1.2 million calls, sent 509,000 texts and knocked on 284,000 doors. A survey suggested that 71 percent of residents who said they weren't inoculated in the first round of outreach reported getting the shot by the second phase, Alsobrooks explained.

The staffers have also provided more than 7,500 families with information on COVID-19 resources like food, rental and employment assistance.

Though the county has finished in-person outreach, remote operations will continue. The county executive encouraged residents to answer the phone for these canvassers.

"We know that many members of our community faced barriers in getting the vaccine," Alsobrooks added. "Our program succeeded in large part by getting our teams out into the community and not waiting for residents to come to us."
