Alsobrooks Won't Run For Governor, Will Run For County Exec Again

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MD — Prince George's County Executive Angela Alsobrooks will not run to be Maryland's next governor, The Washington Post reported Wednesday. Journalist Rachel Chason wrote that the Democrat will instead seek a second term as county executive in the 2022 election. Chason mentioned that Alsobrooks wants to enjoy time with her daughter and help Prince George's recover from the coronavirus pandemic.

Alsobrooks raised the most money last year among any rumored gubernatorial candidate, The Washington Post noted. She also had $1,022,717.77 in her campaign account as of Jan. 13.

This sum led many leaders to predict that Alsobrooks would throw her hat in the crowded governor's race. Chason explained that these Democrats are running to replace Gov. Larry Hogan, whose second term will end after the 2022 contest:

  • Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot
  • Former U.S. Secretary of Education John King

The only two Republican candidates are Maryland Secretary of Commerce Kelly Schulz and anti-tax advocate Robin Ficker, The Washington Post added.
