BOWIE, MD — The Bowie Baysox, the Double-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, is taking part in an effort to help feed people in need, while honoring those risking their lives during the coronavirus pandemic.

The Baysox have joined a new national initiative developed by Minor League Baseball called MiLB CommUNITY First, which is partnering with Feeding America to raise money for local food banks.

Baysox fans are encouraged to make a donation online and designate the Baysox as the recipient of the funds, which will go directly to the Capital Area Food Bank community. For every $10 donated, the Baysox will donate a future home game ticket, either for this season or in 2021, to a local hero of the pandemic.

“Minor League Baseball teams throughout our country have always found unique and meaningful ways to support our local communities,” said Baysox General Manager Brian Shallcross, in a press release. “The Baysox are proud to support MiLB’s Feeding America initiative. We certainly understand that our community is hurting right now. However, initiatives such as this are crucial for us to come together as a community … while practicing distancing of course!”

The Baysox postponed the start of the 2020 baseball season on March 13, due to the coronavirus pandemic. According to the press release, the team plans to return this year to celebrate the franchise's 28th season.
