Christmas 2019: What's Open, What's Closed In Bowie

BOWIE, MD — Christmas Day falls on a Wednesday, meaning local government and other services will take a break mid week. It's a given that many services are closed on Christmas Day, but others will be closed Christmas Eve and surrounding days as well.

We've rounded up the closings and schedule changes to know around Bowie. Schools are closed for an extended winter break, while other services will run on half-day schedules on Christmas Eve.

City of Bowie Offices: All city offices will be closed Dec. 25.

Prince George's County Government Offices: All county offices will be closed Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

State Courts: All state courts are closed Dec. 25.

Prince George's County Public Schools: Schools are closed Dec. 23-Jan. 1 for winter break.

Post Offices: Closed Dec. 25. No mail will be delivered.

TheBus: Several routes will not operate Christmas Day. Regular service resumes Dec. 26. See affected routes.

Call-A-Bus: Closed Dec. 25. Services will resume Dec. 26.

CountyClick 3-1-1: Closed Dec. 25. Services will resume Dec. 26. Residents still may submit service requests online at www.countyclick311.com.

Metrorail: On Dec. 25, the Metro system will be open 8 a.m.-11 p.m. and operate on a Sunday schedule. Parking will be free at all Metro parking facilities, and off-peak fares will be in effect all day. There are no scheduled changes for Dec. 24.

Metrobus: Buses will operate on a Sunday schedule on Dec. 25. See bus timetables.

Prince George's County Memorial Library System: All branches will be closed Dec. 24-25.

Community Centers: Closed Dec. 25.

PG County Historical Sites/Parks: Historical sites are open by rental only. Regional parks are open normal hours.

Animal Shelter: Closed Dec. 25.

Trash Collection: The City of Bowie will not collect trash Wednesday, and no makeup days are scheduled. In county-contracted areas, trash and recycling collection occurs Dec. 24. No trash or recycling will be collected Wednesday, and collection days for the remainder of the week will be delayed by one day. Contact private providers for any schedule changes.

Landfills/Recycling Centers: Brown Station Road facilities will be closed Dec. 25. Prince George's County Materials Recycling Facility and Organics Composting Facility, in addition to the Missouri Avenue Solid Waste Acceptance and Recycling Center, also will be closed Christmas Day.

Movie Theaters: Most area movie theaters will be open Christmas Day. We would encourage calling your theater of choice to confirm hours.

Grocery Stores: Area grocery stores hours are as follows —

  • Safeway: 5 a.m.-8 p.m. on Christmas Eve and 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on Christmas Day.
  • Harris Teeter: All stores will close at 7 p.m. Dec. 24 and re-open at 8 a.m. on Dec. 26.
  • Giant Food: Hours: 6 a.m.-7 p.m. on Christmas Eve and 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on Christmas Day.
  • Lidl: Open 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Christmas Eve and closed on Christmas Day.
  • ALDI: 8 a.m.-4 p.m. on Christmas Eve and closed on Christmas Day.
  • Shoppers: 6 a.m.-8 p.m. on Christmas Eve and closed on Christmas Day.
  • Walmart: 6 a.m.-6 p.m. on Christmas Eve and closed on Christmas Day.
  • Target: 7 a.m.-10 p.m. on Christmas Eve and closed on Christmas Day.
