County Nears 50% Vaccination, Health Metrics Hit Record Lows

Nearly 50 percent of Prince George's has gotten at least one shot. This comes as the county sets record lows for most health metrics.

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MD — Around 43 percent of Prince George's County residents are fully inoculated. About 49 percent have gotten at least one dose of the coronavirus vaccine. Seventy-three percent of Maryland adults have gotten at least one shot.

In other news, the coronavirus case rate is at its best clip since March 2020. The percent positivity has dipped to its best mark ever. And the hospitalization count has fallen to a record low.

Last week's 74 cases are up 68 from the week prior. This is the first week since March 2020 that Prince George's tallied less than 100 new infections in a week. This is the fifth straight week that the county recorded less than 500 new cases, an achievement that was elusive since April 2020.

It was also the eighth straight week that Prince George's posted less than 1,000 new infections. Before this stretch, the county hadn't accomplished the feat since late last October.

The virus also killed five county residents last week, which is one fewer than the week before, the Maryland Department of Health said. Here's a look at where the numbers stand in Prince George's County.

Full Vaccinations

  • Currently: 42.82 percent
  • Trend: Up by 1.51 percentage points
  • Rank: 15th out of the state's 24 jurisdictions
  • Trend: No change
  • Comments: New full immunizations dropped slightly last week and fell short of the record high, set six weeks ago. New full inoculations have decreased in five of the last six weeks. Prince George's had the lowest vaccination rate in Maryland until April 26.

At Least One Dose

  • Currently: 48.96 percent
  • Trend: Up by 0.9 percentage points

This is the percentage of residents who have gotten at least one dose of the inoculation. The Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines both require two shots. The Johnson & Johnson immunization only has one injection.

Coronavirus Case Rate

  • Currently: 1.16
  • Trend: Down by 1.07
  • Comments: The case rate fell for the tenth straight week. Before that, infections were on a four-week hike. This is the lowest clip since March 25, 2020.
  • Recent High: 21.43 on April 14
  • Recent Low: 1.16 on June 20
  • Overall High: 58.83 on Jan. 14
  • Overall Low: 0.5 on March 23, 2020

Hospitalizations

  • Currently: 14
  • Trend: Down by 6
  • Comments: Hospitalizations declined for the ninth straight week. The count has dropped by 144 in this span. This is the lowest total that Prince George's has ever seen during the coronavirus pandemic.
  • Recent High: 158 in the week of April 11
  • Recent Low: 14 in the week of June 13
  • Overall High: 244 in the week of May 3, 2020
  • Overall Low: 14 in the week of June 13

ICU Hospitalizations

  • Currently: 5
  • Trend: Down by 2
  • Comments: Intensive Care Unit hospitalizations declined for the ninth straight week. This is the lowest clip that the county has ever recorded.
  • Recent High: 56 in the week of April 11
  • Recent Low: 5 in the week of June 13
  • Overall High: 75 in the week of Dec. 27, 2020
  • Overall Low: 5 in the week of June 13

Positivity Rate

  • Currently: 0.78 percent
  • Trend: Down by 0.45 percentage points
  • Comments: The positivity rate fell for the tenth straight week. This is the county's lowest mark ever.
  • Recent High: 6.32 percent on April 14
  • Recent Low: 0.78 percent on June 20
  • Overall High: 41.95 percent on May 2, 2020
  • Overall Low: 0.78 percent on June 20

Total Cases And Deaths

Prince George's County's 85,420 coronavirus infections are the most in the state. The virus is blamed for the death of 1,551 county residents.
