Happy Mother’s Day To Sharon Alexander
"Without my mother I would not be the man I am today."

In celebration of Mother's Day on Sunday May 13, we asked Patch readers to write a letter to their mother and let us deliver it. This is Daniel Dively's letter to his mom:
My mother, Sharon Alexander, is the most loving woman in my life. She has been so strong, from when I was young to even right now. Without my mother I would not be the man I am today. She will give you anything she can or do anything for you. I guess that is why I have a huge sense of service to people.
I grew up in the most untraditional way. My parents divorced when I was very young, and my mother found the love of her life in her partner, Lori Richards. They have been together for about 29 years. I grew up in Bowie, Maryland, but she lived in Greenbelt and Crofton. She made sure that we stayed grounded in Bowie, whether it be for school or in sports. She pushed me every day of my life in every aspect of my life, and without her I would not have gone to Virginia Tech.
My life exemplifies Virginia Tech's motto: “Ut Prosim” or “That I May Serve.” I was in the US Army and am now a Roanoke city police officer and would not have had this calling without my mother. I want to thank you, Mom, for always being there and for always believing in me; even when I am lost.
I love you, Mom, forever and ever.
Love your baby boy,
Daniel Dively
