Metro Will Build $225M Train Repair Facility In Prince George's

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MD — Metro officials selected the designers and builders for a train repair center in Prince George's County last Tuesday. The firms Hensel Phelps and Stantec will handle the $225 million project, slated to finish in the fourth quarter of 2024. The hub, called the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority Heavy Repair and Overhaul Facility, will house:

• Service bays for 40 rail cars
• A rail car truck shop
• Enough storage for 24 rail cars

The warehouse will connect to the Metrorail Orange Line. Officials did not specify which town the workshop will be built in.

The building will meet the highest environmental standards. It will achieve platinum certification from Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, a respected green project ranker.

“This new facility will support an enhanced model for maintenance and repairs that will contribute to WMATA’s objectives for a safer and more efficient system,” Stantec representative Ken Anderson said in a press release. “By integrating sustainability and resiliency with advanced functionality and high-quality spatial design, WMATA is positioned to have one of the most unique transit facilities in the country.”
