LARGO, MD — The University of Maryland Capital Region Medical Center will open Saturday in Largo. The facility will replace the University of Maryland Prince George’s Hospital Center in Cheverly.

"For decades, the citizens of Prince George’s County have not had the level of high quality patient care that they deserve," Gov. Larry Hogan said in a press release. "As a lifelong Marylander who spent the greater part of my life growing up, living, and working right here in Prince George’s County, addressing this need has been important and personal to me. That’s why I am proud to have been a strong supporter of this project since day one."

The state, county and university split the costs of the $550 million complex. Hogan noted that his administration committed more than $200 million to the project.

"The opening of a new @UMCapitalRegion hospital in Largo is the culmination of more than a decade of work to meet the health needs of Prince Georgians," tweeted Anthony Brown, the representative for Maryland's 4th Congressional District. "Today is a big day for our communities and our efforts to ensure equity and quality of life for those we serve."

Derrick Leon Davis, the County Council Member for District 6, estimated that the facility will generate $397 million for the Prince George's economy.

"This ... is a massive victory for every resident in Prince George's County and a giant step forward for equity for communities of color in our state and region," County Council Member At-Large Mel Franklin added in a separate release. "High quality health care is a right, not a privilege, but for far too long our residents have been deprived of state of the art medical facilities in their own county. That ends today."

The hospital is located at 901 North Harry S. Truman Drive. Head to umms.org/capital for more information.
