Officer Hit By Car, Suspect Tased After Police Chase: Officials

An officer was hit by a car near Temple Hills, officials said. Authorities added that a chase ensued, and police tased one of the suspects.

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MD — Police said an officer was hit by a car Wednesday morning. That led to a chase near Temple Hills, officials noted. Authorities mentioned that they shot at the accused car and tased one of the suspects.

Officers explained that they caught two of the three suspects in the vehicle, but one is still on the run. The two suspects and the injured officer went to an unnamed hospital, the Prince George's County Police Department added. All three have minor injuries, the agency continued.

The department mentioned that protocol requires medics to take all tased subjects to the hospital. The other suspect had a medical emergency when police stopped the accused car, officers informed.

Deputy Chief Anthony Schartner reported that the doctors released the injured officer. He expects the hospital to discharge the two suspects "shortly."

Schartner stated that police will officially arrest their suspects after their release. He clarified that he does not yet know what their exact charges will be.

How It Happened

The incident started around 10:30 a.m., police advised. Schartner confirmed that a caller told dispatchers that their wallet was stolen from their vehicle Wednesday morning in Washington, D.C.

Police indicated that the victim's credit card company listed unauthorized charges in the 4900 block of Beech Road. Schartner detailed that two officers walked up to the site, which is home to a car body shop.

The deputy chief recalled that a garage door opened, and a black Dodge Charger sped out, hitting one officer. The other officer shot at the car, Schartner elaborated, but he doesn't think the bullets hit anybody.

The Charger sped away, police shared, and the chase ensued. The pursuit ended about 3.2 miles away near the intersection of Naylor Road and Suitland Parkway, authorities divulged.

The three suspects exited the car and tried to run away, officials recounted. That's when the tasing happened, Schartner specified.

Officers alleged that the Charger was reported stolen from Washington, D.C.

As a matter of protocol, the agency announced that it placed one officer on administrative leave during the investigation. That officer has been with the department for nearly eight years, authorities commented.

Schartner also suggested that body-worn, patrol-car and building-security cameras were all present. He does not yet know if they caught the encounter on tape, however.

"We’ve got two different crime scenes, so you can only imagine that it’s hectic," the deputy chief said at a press conference.
