UPDATE: An armed robbery suspect was shot and killed by a police officer at a Checkers in Prince George's County, police said.

(Updated at 9:15 a.m. Tuesday): CLINTON, MD — An armed robbery suspect was shot and killed by a police officer at a Checkers in Clinton early Monday morning, police said.

Police announced Tuesday that the deceased suspect was identified as Anthony Trice Jr., 24, of Piscataway Road in Clinton.

Police responded to a burglary alarm at the Checkers at 8815 Woodyard Rd. at about 3:40 a.m. Monday.

A responding officer noticed the window of the drive-thru was broken into and requested backup, Prince George’s County Police Chief Hank Stawinski said.

Officers spotted Trice Jr. inside the restaurant with a crowbar, trying to break into the safe, Stawinski said. They set up a perimeter and called to the suspect to surrender, but he did not comply.

Trice Jr. came out of a side door with a gun in his hand. He pointed his gun at at least two officers, police said.

Officers ordered Trice Jr. to drop the weapon.

One officer discharged his gun, and struck Trice Jr. one time in the leg, Stawinski said.

The officers immediately began rendering aid to Trice Jr., who then died at the hospital.

No officers were injured.

Stawinski said they recovered the suspect's gun and car from the scene. Evidence technicians also recovered a spent shell casing from that gun and a screwdriver at the scene.

A nearby Popeye's was broken into that night, and police strongly believe the robbery was committed by the same suspect.

"It is believed the suspect broke into a neighboring business by using a gun to shoot out a window to gain entry just prior to breaking into the Checkers," police said.

The PGPD officer who discharged his weapon and struck the suspect is Corporal Scott Weisbrod. He has been with the department for seven years and nine months and is currently assigned to the Bureau of Patrol, police said.

Corporal Weisbrod is on routine administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
