Prince George's Gets $17M To Bolster Vaccination Efforts

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MD — Maryland gave Prince George's County $17 million to ramp up its coronavirus vaccination effort. Gov. Larry Hogan announced the funding Thursday, awarding money to every jurisdiction based on its population. Altogether, Hogan handed out $123.2 million.

The funding goes directly to the Prince George's County Health Department. The Maryland Department of Health will oversee its spending. If the county does not use all its money, the state may reallocate the funding to its own vaccine rollout.

County health departments usually charge fees for their immunization clinics. They got rid of those charges for the coronavirus inoculation, however. That means health departments may suffer losses from their vaccination events.

Hogan asked the Maryland General Assembly for money to offset these deficits. If approved, Prince George's County will get $1,230,235.90.

“As the state begins mass vaccination, and continues to expand the distribution network of vaccinators, county health departments will play a critical role in our focus on hard-to-reach areas and underserved populations,” Hogan said in a press release. “I want to thank and extend my appreciation to all of the vaccinators who are working around the clock to serve the community.”
