Suitland Man Pleads Guilty To Fatal DC Hit-And-Run: Report

WASHINGTON, DC — A Suitland man pleaded guilty Tuesday to striking a Smithsonian employee with his car at a busy intersection in the District and then driving away, according to a media report. The accident victim, a 64-year-old bicyclist, later died of his injuries, radio station WTOP reported.

Phillip Peoples, 20, admitted responsibility for the hit-and-run crash that killed Thomas Hendricks Hollowell of Arlington, Va., WTOP reported.

The fatal accident occurred at about 7:30 a.m. on Sept. 24 at the intersection of 12th Street and Constitution Avenue NW, DC police said. Hollowell was pedaling to work at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, on the Mall.

Peoples was arrested last month, WTOP reported. At first he was charged with second-degree murder, but he accepted a plea deal with the lesser charge of involuntary manslaughter, according to the radio station.
