Verizon Recalls Wi-Fi Hotspots Used By PGCPS Students
Citing fire concerns, Verizon recalled most of the Wi-Fi hotspots used by distance learners in Prince George's County.

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MD — Verizon recalled nearly all the Wi-Fi hotspots used by Prince George's County Public Schools. The rollback affects about 2.5 million devices across the country. The gadgets are known as Verizon Ellipsis Jetpack mobile hotspots.
School officials announced the news Monday, noting that the lithium-ion battery inside the units can overheat and potentially cause fires. PGCPS uses this equipment to bring Wi-Fi to distance learners who have reduced internet access.
The school system asked families to turn on the appliances so they can automatically install two software updates.

These downloads will let users see the device identification number on the screen, helping them eventually exchange the product. The installation is done after this number pops up. The updates will also prevent the hotspots from charging when they are plugged in and turned on.
PGCPS advised families to turn off and unplug the devices when they are not in use. The school system also recommended avoiding extreme heat and liquids. Users should not drop the unit or insert foreign objects into the battery.

"PGCPS will be working with Verizon as quickly and efficiently as possible to return all Ellipsis Jetpack mobile hotspot devices that were issued by PGCPS," the school system said in an email. "We will send additional communication about the process for families to return their hotspots and receive a new one."
